Author Dr. Yan Mingxia Arrested for Promoting Traditional Chinese Culture

Dr. Yan Mingxia, Deputy Division Officer of the Guangdong Province Union Association and an associate researcher in Ethnic Studies at Guizhou Ethnic University, was arrested by police in Guangzhou City on May 2nd, 2014 for introducing to others her Shen Yun Performing Arts DVD. Her computer and personal belongings were taken, and she has been detained in the Liwan District Detention Centre. Shen Yun Performing Arts, a New York-based classical Chinese dance company, aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture through performing arts. Dr. Yan strives to promote traditional Chinese culture. Her efforts to promote Shen Yun drew the attention of the Chinese Communist Party, which led to her being arrested. -
Ms. Yang Chunling Dies as a Result of Torture and Abuse for Tapping into a TV Network to Broadcast Falun Gong Programmes
2014-05-25Falun Gong stories are the most intensively censored information by the Chinese communist regime since it banned the practice. Ms. Yang Chunling defied this censorship by tapping into a cable television network and playing a video about the regime's infamous history and its persecution of Falun Gong. She recently paid the ultimate price for having the courage to overcome the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s censorship and telling people about the goodness of Falun Gong. The CCP authorities found her and arrested her soon after the broadcast. The police viciously beat her and sentenced her to 7 years in prison. She passed away on April 2, 2014, one year after her release. -
Ms. Yang Shifen Dies in Fujian Province Two Days after Being Released, Six More Practitioners Arrested
2014-05-25One of the more than 10 practitioners arrested earlier this year in Fujian Province, Ms. Yang Shifen from Shishi City, died on March 9th, 2014, two days after being released from a detention centre. The large-scale, province-wide arrests have not eased, as six more Falun Gong practitioners were recently arrested. Ms. Yang Shifeng had been repeatedly harassed by local Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during the past few years. Her home was ransacked multiple times and her eldest daughter has also been arrested. -
Mother Dies, Daughter Who Suffered a Mental Collapse Due to Torture Now on Her Own
2014-05-25Ms. Hu Fengying, 65, died on May 6th, 2014, after experiencing long-term persecution for practising Falun Gong. Ms. Hu was arrested, then held at a detention centre and a brainwashing centre. She later became paralysed. She succumbed to the tremendous pressure and died. Her daughter, who suffered a mental collapse due to torture, is now on her own. -
Sixty Falun Gong Practitioners Arrested for Distributing Shen Yun DVDs
2014-05-20According to statistics from the Minghui website, there have been about 40 arrest cases since February 2014, involving over 60 Falun Gong practitioners who were arrested for distributing Shen Yun DVDs. Shen Yun, a New York-based performing arts company whose mission is to promote Chinese traditional culture, has been very popular overseas since its inception in 2006. Audiences of different nationalities, beliefs, and ages, have been deeply moved by the beauty and charm that Shen Yun imparts. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authorities have systematically destroyed China's traditional culture since the regime took control of China in 1949. -
Primary School Teacher Ms. Zhou Zequn Dies as a Result of Persecution
2014-05-20Retired teacher Ms. Zhou Zequn, 70, died as a result of torture on May 2nd, 2014. She had been sentenced to a four-year prison term at Chongqing Women's Prison in 2011, due to her belief in Falun Gong. Ms. Zhou's family was notified by prison guards on February 18th, 2014, to come and take her home. They family found out that Ms. Zhou had been tortured. She could no longer walk and had blood in her urine and stools. She had also been injected with unidentified drugs that destroy the central nervous system. She had lost her memory and could no longer recognize any words. -
Documenting the Bizarre Trial of Mr. Li Shujun in the Xingcheng City Court
2014-05-20Practitioner Mr. Li Shujun was arrested on August 24th, 2013, by police. His home was ransacked. His telephone had been bugged and monitored prior to his arrest. On the day of the trial, March 28th, 2014, it the court lobby, security checkpoint staff asked if anyone was a Falun Gong practitioner, and, if so, that person would not be admitted. During the trial when the judge and prosecutor spoke, the speaker volume was loud and clear. When Mr. Li and his lawyer spoke, the volume was abnormally low. In the end, the court did not allow any time for debate as is usual for such cases, nor was the verdict announced. -
Two Practitioners Arrested Again after Spending Six Years in Prison
2014-05-20A dozen police officers broke into the home of Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Guan Rian and his wife, Ms. Zhao Xin, on April 2nd, 2014. The couple, in their 30s, was arrested and held in the Mudanjiang Detention Centre. Previously, the couple was arrested in 2002 and put on trial. Each was sentenced to six years in prison. Ms. Zhao was taken to Heilongjiang Women's Prison and Mr. Guan to Mudanjiang Prison. In prison, guards brutally beat Ms. Zhao. She went on a hunger strike and the authorities force-fed her. -
Ms. Sun Libin's Personal Account of the Persecution She Suffered for Upholding Her Belief
2014-05-20Ms. Sun Libin, 59, previously suffered from migraines and stomach problems. She benefited physically and mentally after she took up the cultivation practice of Falun Gong. However, she was arrested and imprisoned merely for distributing DVDs exposing the persecution of Falun Gong. Ms. Sun was sentenced to three and a half years of prison in Harbin Women's Prison in 2011. She developed tuberculosis as a result of the torture and poor living conditions she suffered while imprisoned, and was detained in the prison hospital for more than seven months. The prison did not allow her medical parole. -
Bedridden Practitioner Passes Away After Witnessing Fellow Practitioners' Arrest
2014-05-19Police broke into the home of bedridden Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhao Lije, in her 60s, on April 12th, 2014, and arrested five practitioners who were taking care of her. The police ransacked Ms. Zhao's home and confiscated a computer, 1,000 yuan, and Falun Gong books and materials. Ms. Lijie passed away on April 17th, five days after the police arrested the five practitioners. -
Mr. Wang Wenzhang from Liaoning Province Passed Away as a Result of Persecution
2014-05-19Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Wang Wenzhang was persecuted repeatedly for upholding his practice of Falun Gong. Most recently he was arrested and sentenced to four years in prison in March 2009. He was brutally tortured in Dongling Prison and suffered a stroke. He was released on bail for medical treatment in early 2013. It was too late however, and within the next six months Mr. Wang became paralyzed. On March 28th, 2014, at the age of 65, he lost his life. -
84 Falun Gong Practitioners Confirmed Still Detained in Liaoning Women's Prison
2014-05-13Ms. Liu Zhi, 51, a Falun Gong practitioner from Shenyang, was arrested on October 22nd, 2009. She was sentenced to four years in prison in July 2011. At Liaoning Women's Prison, she was subjected to the “stretching” torture, high noise levels, and frequent blood tests. The police also put unknown drugs in her food. Ms. Liu became paralysed from the waist down and incontinent in less than six months. When she was taken to the hospital on March 8th, 2013, after losing consciousness, the doctors didn't even know how to treat her and they refused to admit her. So Ms. Liu was released on bail and taken home to recover. -

Taxi Driver Brutally Tortured in Detention for Two Months
2014-05-13Mr. Zhao Fuqiang, a Falun Gong practitioner from Hegang City, Heilongjiang Province, was arrested on June 14th, 2013. He was brutally tortured, including being shocked with electric batons and force-fed, during the two months he was detained in the Hegang City Second Detention Centre and the Hegan City Brainwashing Centre. -
Mr. Zhang Hongwei Tortured in Prison for 13 Years
2014-05-13Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Zhang Hongwei went to Beijing in 2001 to appeal for the right to practise Falun Gong. He was arrested by police and first held in a detention centre, then in the Beijing Police Department No.7 Division. Later, he was sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment by the Fangshan District Court. Mr. Zhang protested the persecution by going on a hunger strike for two months, and was brutally force-fed. Subsequently, he had to repeatedly endure inhumane torture.
