A fourteen-year-old girl came to the Ningjiang Street Police Station in Shongyuan City, Jilin Province on August 24th, 2008, and asked for the release of her mother, who had been imprisoned there for three months. The girl had been thrown out by her landlord, and she had no money for tuition or room and board for the upcoming school year.

The police station director first threatened to go to her school administration, and later promised to release the girl's mother if her aunt came and signed some documents. After that, the police took her back to the apartment that'd she'd been kicked out of and left her there.

On August 25th, the girl's aunt came from the countryside. She went to the police station with the girl, but the director refused to release the mother. The police also forced the aunt to sign some documents and take the girl away. When the girl kept begging for her mother's release, the director told two officers, "Drag the girl over here." When the aunt held on to the girl's hand, an officer punched her in the face and knocked her to the ground. The girl was dragged off to another room.

Officer Yuan Chuanlei entered the room and he punched and kicked the girl dozens of times. Her head was badly bruised, and she was dizzy long after the beating. The officer threatened her, "You will be sent to juvenile reform if you dare to ask for your mother again."

The mother of the girl is 38-year-old Ms. Zhang Lipo. She went through a divorce when her daughter was eight months old. She opened a tailor shop and raised the girl by herself. Ms. Zhang started practising Falun Gong in 1998.

After the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) started persecuting Falun Gong practitioners in 1999, Ms. Zhang distributed leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong and the CCP's lies. She was arrested and almost beaten to death. Later she was sentenced to one year of forced labour.

At around 4:00 p.m. on May 27th, 2008, before the Olympic torch reached the city, she was arrested without cause at a supermarket by officer Yuan Chunlei from the Linjiang Street Police Station.

After Ms. Zhang Lipo was arrested, her fourteen-year-old daughter was left without any support. The girl managed to finish the school semester, but with the upcoming new semester, she had no way to pay her tuition or her room and board. Her relatives are poor farmers who can hardly support themselves, and they can't help her pay the 8,000 yuan1 per-year tuition, room and board.

We hope that people take note of this case and secure Ms. Zhang's release.
