Mr. Liu Ruping, a Falun Gong practitioner from the Changqing District in Jinan City, was a lawyer from the Shuntian Law Firm in Shandong Province. Less than a month ago he and his wife, Zhang Chenglan, were arrested.

Around 3 p.m. on August 12th, 2008, just as Ms. Zhang was leaving home, officials from the 610 Office1 and the police station in Changqing arrested her. They took her house key and entered her home without the permission of her husband (Liu Ruping) and son, who were home at the time. The police ransacked the home and took away their computer, printer, and Falun Gong informational materials. Officials present included Meng Qian from the 610 Office and Guo Jun from Xincheng police station.

So that Mr. Liu wouldn't shout, the officers sprayed pepper water on his face, keeping him from talking or opening his eyes.

The police took a 70-thousand yuan2 deposit certificate and an ATM card over the objections of Mr. Liu and his son.

Liu Ruping was taken to a Jinan brainwashing centre in the Liuchangshan District. Ms. Zhang was put in the Jinan detention centre.

The couple had been reported to the police. After monitoring and following them for several days, taking their pictures and taping their telephone calls, the officials arrested them.

On December 14th, 2005, Liu Ruping was sentenced to one year and three months in Wangcun Forced Labour Camp. Mr. Liu remained determined in his belief and refused to be "transformed3." He was therefore tortured both physically and mentally. In addition, his term was extended by two months and 22 days. Since the beginning of this year, officials from the 610 Office and the Changqing police station have broken into practitioners' homes many times, ransacking the homes and arresting the practitioners.

Note

1. "The 610 office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems.

2. "Yuan" is the Chinese currency; 500 yuan is equal to the average monthly income of an urban worker in China.
