In mid-August 2008, the Chinese Communist Party 610 Office1 in Lechang City, Guangdong Province, arrested two young mothers, both Falun Gong practitioners. Ms. Gong Xuejun is the mother of an 18-month-old and Ms. Yu Shanzhen has a three-year-old. They were each sentenced to two years of forced labour and taken to the notorious Sanshui Women's Forced Labour Camp.

On August 19th, 2008, at around 1 p.m., two police cars from the Lechang 610 Office went to Ms. Gong's home, searched it, and took her by forced to the Lechang Public Security Bureau. At around 5 p.m. that day she was taken to Lechang Detention Centre. No family members were allowed to visit her. Her elderly father and mother-in-law were left at home to care for her 18-month-old son. The following day, Ms. Yu was arrested in a shop by an official from the local 610 Office. Her child is only three years old. In addition, the official stole personal computers that belonged to a relative.

Since the day Ms. Gong was arrested, her family hasn't stopped trying to reason with the departments involved, rain or shine. They have spoken to their representative in the National People's Congress, the secretary of the Party committee in the local city council, the public security bureau, and the 610 Office, but everyone has given them the same answer: "The 'government' has made the decision. We can't do anything."
