A court in Hong Kong made a verdict of fining the 16 Falun Gong practitioners who held peaceful protest in front of the Liaison Office of China. This verdict attracted a lot of people’s attention to the freedom and human rights protection of former English colonies.
It was the first accusation of Falun Gong practitioners outside mainland China.
Four Swiss, one New Zealander and 11 Hong Kong dwellers were convicted of blocking the street in the protest on March 14, where nine of them were also convicted of obstructing polic.
Some people said they are innocent. The court, however, fined them from 1,300 to 3,800 Hong Kong dollars (1,600 to 4,600 krona).
Hong Kong has been a special city of China that has some of autonomies since 1997. The trial on Falun Gong practitioners is regarded as a test of equality to and independence from the mainland of the country.
Falun Gong is a cultivation practice system which consists of meditation and several sets of slow and gentle movements. A spokesperson of this spiritual movement, which is based on forbearance, anti-violence and self-development, said that Falun Gong practitioners were preparing to appeal
“We felt surprised at the verdict of the judge”, said Sharon Xu, “we would definitely urge him to change his wrong sentence and we are going to appeal until our innocence is affirmed.” To Hong Kong, this was a black day.
