Ms. Liu Yanmei from Puwang Town, Yinan County, Shandong Province, was arrested on September 8th. Her whereabouts are unknown.

That day, Yinan County 610 Office agents (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong), along with officers from the Puwang Town Police Station and plainclothes police, broke into Ms. Liu's home and took her Falun Gong books, two computers, two inkjet printers, a laser printer, a CD-burner, and other personal belongings. They even took her son's LCD TV and DVD player that he had bought for his wedding.

Ms. Liu is a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine in Dagou Village, Puwang Town. After July 1999, because she has remained steadfast in her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, she has been arrested many times and violently beaten by her captors. She once suffered a concussion due to a severe beating and was unconscious for six months and could not take care of herself. In order to make her “reform,” [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) agents subjected her to forced labour twice. The first time she had a nervous breakdown, and the second time her term was extended by more than three years.

Ms. Liu travelled to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong on February 16th, 2000. She was arrested at Tiananmen Square and was later taken back to her hometown to be detained and brutally tortured. At a brainwashing centre, officer Zhuan Qiande shouted at her and hit her in the head with a stick. Ms. Liu fainted. When she came to, she had been brain damaged and suffered from partial memory loss. She was taken home. All day long, she would just sit quietly without any emotion; she could not even speak. Her husband gave her Falun Gong books. She repeatedly looked at Zhuan Falun and flipped through the pages. Finally, she was able to read the characters in Zhuan Falun and she started to regain her memory. She asked her husband how long she had been like that. It had been six months.

Ms. Liu was arrested again for distributing materials exposing the persecution of Falun Gong on May 23rd, 2006, and sentenced to three years of forced labour on May 30th, 2006. She was taken to the Shandong Province No.1 Women's Forced Labour Camp and severely tortured. For example, she was forced to stay up all night until the early morning. This regime lasted until she was released in June 2009. The guards tied her to an iron chair and taped her mouth shut for nine days. Her legs and feet swelled terribly. During the first two days her legs and feet hurt, then they became completely numb.

Ms. Liu became extremely weak after repeated imprisonments, brainwashing, physical torture, and having to do hard labour for long periods of time. Afraid that they would be blamed with her death, the labour camp officials finally released her.
