Mr. Hou Yanshuang from Lingyuan City, Liaoning Province has been detained and persecuted for nine years. As a result of being severely tortured in Shenyang No. 1 Prison, he suffers from bone spurs on his vertebrae and high blood pressure, and has had a heart attack and a stroke. He cannot take care of himself. Doctors said that Mr. Hou must be cared for at a hospital, but officials from the prison will not allow it. Mr. Hou's family members wanted to take him home for treatment, but officials from the prison also denied that request. He is currently being detained in the Sixth Ward of the prison.

Head of Prison Affairs Ordered Prisoners to Severely Beat Mr. Hou

Mr. Hou was arrested on the evening of October 21st, 2001, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. He was transferred to Shenyang Prison on August 27th, 2002. That same day, Jia Ke, head of prison affairs, ordered prisoners to severely beat Mr. Hou, causing severe injuries to his lumbar and cervical vertebrae. Afterward, officials from the prison didn't provide Mr. Hou with any treatment.

In January 2009, doctors from the prison hospital determined that Mr. Hou had suffered a stroke and a heart attack. Right now, Mr. Hou is in critical condition, and his systolic blood pressure is as high as 230 mmhg.

Mr. Hou's Whole Family Persecuted by the Communist Regime

Mr. Hou's mother-in-law and father-in-law are both Falun Gong practitioners. They have six children, among whom three daughters and two sons-in-law are also practitioners. Because they made leaflets exposing the persecution of Falun Gong, the whole family suffered persecution in 2001. The oldest sister, Ms. Li Chunling, was sentenced to four years of imprisonment, and her husband Mr. Han Liguo was sentenced to six years in prison, leaving their daughter, Ms. Han Xue, to live alone. The fifth sister, Ms. Li Chunyan, was also sentenced to three years of imprisonment.

In addition to Mr. Hou's 14-year prison sentence, his wife had to leave their home, leaving their 12-year-old son to live alone. Policemen broke into Mr. Hou's house and did a search, taking away the family's deposit books, cash, other goods, and a property ownership certificate, traumatising the young boy in the process.

The oldest brother-in-law, Mr. Han Liguo, has been detained in the 20th Ward of Shenyang No. 2 Prison since 2001. He was taken away by Li Jianguo, head of the prison guard team, at around 9:00 a.m. on July 3rd, 2004, and never came back. Officials from the prison notified the family that Mr. Han had passed away as a result of a heart attack. The real cause of his death remains unknown.

Mr. Hou's father-in-law and mother-in-law suffered much anguish over the persecution of their family. His mother-in-law had a recurrence of old illnesses, and passed away a couple of years ago.
