Marking the tenth year of Falun Gong practitioners' efforts to resist the persecution, practitioners gathered at Vienna's famous tourist attraction, St. Stephen's Cathedral, on July 18, 2009. They called attention to the ten-year-long persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and appealed to every sector of society to learn the truth about Falun Gong.

Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria. With a population of about two million, it is home to one quarter of the total population of Austria. St. Stephen's Cathedral has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Vienna.

The practitioners displayed a series of large photos depicting Falun Gong and the persecution in front of the square. Tourists from various countries all over the world stopped to view the display or take photos. Among them were also many Chinese tourists watching quietly.

Western practitioners performed songs including "Coming For You" and "Falun Dafa Is Good" showing the audience the beauty and hope of Falun Dafa despite the persecution.

Around July 20 every year Austrian Falun Dafa practitioners hold an event appealing for the end of the persecution and allowing more people to learn about what is happening.

Background

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a traditional Chinese spiritual discipline for mind and body. The practice involves slow, gentle movements and meditation. It is easy to learn, enjoyable to practise, and free of charge. Its principles are based on Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The practice began in China in 1992 and quickly spread by word of mouth throughout China and then beyond. Its beneficial effects in uplifting an individual's physical health, spiritual well-being and moral character, not to mention its positive influence in the community and society as a whole, have been undeniable. In fact, Falun Gong is practised by over 100 million people in 110 countries. The main works of Falun Gong are available in over 30 languages.

On July 20, 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched a brutal persecution of Falun Gong. Since the start of the persecution, Falun Gong practitioners throughout the world have been constantly speaking out about the truth of Falun Gong and exposing the CCP's crimes in a tireless effort to end the persecution.
