Torture method 6: tie-up
Form A: whole-body tie up

The practitioner's body is kept straight and tied up all over with rope(s). He is prevented from lowering his head and is forbidden to sleep. If he nods off, he will receive electric shocks to his neck and chin, as well as other sensitive body parts.

Form B: legs tied up and hands cuffed behind the back

The practitioner's legs are tightly tied with a thin rope with his legs in the double-crossed position; his arms are forced behind his back and handcuffed. There are two ways of handcuffing, as illustrated in photos 17 and 18. The victim is tied in these positions for several hours or sometimes more than ten hours at a time. The captors place foul-smelling shoes and other filthy things underneath the victims' noses and sometimes they tape the practitioner's mouth shut. This is a commonly used form of torture when the perpetrators try to "reform1" Falun Gong practitioners. In December 2002, practitioner Wang Fang, around 40 years of age, from Jinzhou City, was tortured this way for more than four hours by Dong Shuxia who ordered the collaborators2 to carry out the torture. Wang Fang lost the feeling in her left leg and cannot walk; she lost the muscle tone in her left arm and as a result cannot move it. The handcuffs cut into the flesh and the scars still remain to this day.

Form C: tie-up in the shape of ball

The practitioner's hands are tied behind his back with a thick rope. The torturers force the practitioner's legs into a tight double-crossed position and tie them up. Then they tie the practitioner's head and legs together, which forces the practitioner into a shape of a ball. The victim first experiences tremendous pain, then loss of feeling in his legs. His legs swell severely because of lack of blood circulation. The practitioner is unable to walk for months after the torture and walks with a limp for years. Sometimes this torture results in permanent disability of both legs. To increase the practitioner's suffering, some guards sit on the practitioner, ignoring the practitioner's painful cries. Practitioner Wang Wenjun, from Jinzhou, who was tortured to death, was tortured this way for nine hours in December 2003. Some practitioners were "tied into a ball" for five days and their legs were permanently disabled after being untied.

Note

1. "Reform or Transform" Implementation of brainwashing and torture in order to force a practitioner to renounce Falun Gong. (Variations: "reform", "transform", "reformed", "reforming", "transformed", "transforming", and "transformation")

2. "Collaborators": Former practitioners who have turned against Falun Gong under brainwashing and torture. They are then made to assist in brainwashing and torturing practitioners.
