LONDON [EFGIC]– On September 2nd a criminal lawsuit was filed in the Spanish Courts against Chinese official, Jia Qinglin, accusing him of crimes of genocide and torture against practitioners of the exercise and meditation system of Falun Gong in China.

Jia Qinglin, who began an official visit to Spain on September 3rd, has been accused of serious crimes against humanity committed during the brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in Mainland China whilst he served as the Secretary of the Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in the city of Beijing from 1999 to November 2002.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are 15 Falun Gong practitioners, who have suffered either directly or indirectly, by way of their family members being persecuted in Beijing, during the time Jia Qinglin was in office.

The accused is one of the members of the Chinese leadership who is known for having directly supported and promoted the persecution of Falun Gong, openly supporting the genocide against Falun Gong practitioners in China.

His activities have been investigated by the WOIPFG [World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong], which has verified that Jia Qinglin gave full support to the campaign of persecution against Falun Gong launched by former Chinese leader, Jiang Zemin, on 20th July 1999. On many occasions, he thanked and praised those who were directly involved in the persecution.

During Jia Qinglin's tenure in office, innumerable atrocities were committed against Falun Gong practitioners. Deaths included that of Wang Lixuan, a mother, and her 8-month old son who together were tortured to death. He is also directly responsible for the illegal detention of countless Falun Gong practitioners in Beijing.

Since Jia Qinglin has been accused of the crime of genocide, he can not claim diplomatic immunity in Spain.

Background

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa (about), is a practise of meditation and exercises with teachings based on the universal principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance." Practised in over 50 countries world-wide, Falun Gong has roots in traditional Chinese culture. With government estimates of as many as 100 million practising Falun Gong, China's Communist leader Jiang Zemin outlawed the peaceful practise in July 1999 (report). Since that time, Jiang's regime has intensified its propaganda campaign to turn public opinion against the practise while imprisoning, torturing and even murdering those who practise it. The European Falun Gong Information Centre has verified details of 1036 deaths (reports / sources) since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999. In October 2001, however, Government officials inside China reported that the actual death toll was well over 1,600. Expert sources now estimate that figure to be much higher. Hundreds of thousands have been detained, with more than 100,000 being sentenced to forced labour camps, typically without trial.
