Xin Jingwen was a 68-year-old woman from Yueyang City, Hunan Province. She was a retired worker of Yueyang Chemistry Factory. In 1996, she began practising Falun Dafa and it improved her health tremendously. She looked much younger than her age.

On February 18, 2004, a local practitioner was arrested while hanging a banner reading "Falun Dafa is Great." Xin was also arrested that day for distributing factual information about Falun Dafa and the persecution. She was detained for 3 days and nights. At 1:00 a.m. on March 3, 5 or 6 police again abducted her from her home and sent her to a local labour camp where she was detained for 40 days. During her detention, the police took her back to her factory three times to interrogate her. However, they could not get any information from her. The police had no choice but to release her, but still they fined her 4,000 yuan (1). Two weeks after her release, Xin was arrested again and sent to the labour camp. On May 2, she died in the labour camp. The police informed her family saying that they would cremate her body immediately. Upon her family's strong request, the police sent her body back to her factory for a funeral service. Her family found many bruises on her body, so they questioned the police. The police department then said it was the labour camp personnel that beat her to death. Practitioners were not allowed to attend her funeral.

(1) Yuan is the unit of currency in China, where the average monthly salary of an urban worker is 500 Yuan.
