The Horrors in the Jiaozhou City Psychology Rehabilitation Hospital

The special rapporteurs on "The Question of Torture and Detention" of the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), Sir Nigel Rodley and Professor Fan Bowen, condemned the large scale torture and mistreatment of Falun Gong practitioners by Jiang Zemin's regime. In their annual report, the persecution of three Falun Gong practitioners at Jiaozhou City mental hospital was mentioned, as follows:

On April 25, 2000, Xu Yanzhong, a villager from Zhaojiayuan Village, Jiaozhou City, Shandong Province was arrested and sent to Jiaozhou City mental hospital for practising Falun Gong. He was tied up and forced to ingest orally administered drugs and receive injections for the following 10 days. It is alleged that he suffered physical and mental mistreatment as well. As a result of the drugs, he became weak all over his body, had difficulty in opening his eyes, and began suffering from anxiety and depression.

Ms. Kuang Bencui was an employee of No. 3 Shoe Factory in Qingdao City. On February 14, 2000, she was arrested on her way to Tiananmen Square and sent to Jiaozhou Liaison Office in Beijing. Then, she was sent to Jiaozhou City mental hospital to be persecuted for her belief in Falun Gong, even though she had no history of mental illness. During her time at the mental hospital, she was forced to ingest orally administered drugs and receive injections. She refused since she was not ill, however, two men seized her arms, pinched her nose, and drove a chopstick between her teeth to force-feed her with pills. She was force-fed three times a day, with the dosage being increased from one tablet at a time to six tablets at a time.

Ms. Tan Guihua, another employee of No. 3 Shoe Factory in Qingdao City, was arrested in her home on September 12, 1999, and taken to the mental hospital. Officers from her work unit, as well as from the Politics and Law Commission, conducted the arrest. At the hospital, she was given an injection. As a result, she felt dizzy and sick, her heartbeat began to accelerate rapidly, and she lost consciousness. In the time period that followed, she was forced to undergo electroshock therapy on seven occasions even though she was not mentally ill. After another drug injection, her menstrual cycle stopped, she had a lot of trouble focusing her eyes, and she had dulled reactions. A few days later, another drug was added to the injection. After being given the second drug, Ms. Tan's body began to suffer from violent tremors for the following 20 days. At the time of her release, she suffered from memory loss, had problems speaking, her eyes were dull, and her reactions had slowed down significantly.

The above facts have been recorded in official documents of the UNHRC, published, and listed on the homepage of United Nations Office of the High Commissioner For Human Rights. However, the information available there is not complete, and there are at least 40 other Falun Gong practitioners suffering from similar persecution at Jiaozhou City mental hospital.

Since the persecution of Falun Gong was begun by the Jiang's regime in 1999, Jiaozhou City mental hospital is now been renamed the "Jiaozhou City Psychology Rehabilitation Hospital," as ordered by former Jiaozhou City seccretary Zhang Yuanfu and the Secretary of the Politics and Law Commission Liu Zuojin. Its methods are very brutal, and many people have been persecuted there. The hospital is perhaps among the top centres used for the persecution of Falun Gong, when compared to other similar mental hospitals. Falun Gong practitioners detained there are strictly isolated, not allowed to be visited by families, and are forcibly drugged with toxic substances that detrimentally affect the central nervous system, until their so called "transformation" is achieved. Only then will the Assistant Secretary in charge of politics and law work and the Politics and Law Commission authorize the release.

Doctors and nurses are often called "white angels." What do the above-mentioned cases of persecution say about these particular doctors and nurses' methods and purpose? When the Jiaozhou City Politics and Law Commission personnel mass arrested large groups of Falun Gong practitioners and sent them to the mental hospital against their will, the medical workers' role changed. Both doctors and nurses in the hospital have violated their professional ethics and oaths, compromised their conscience, and tarnished the sacred status of being a medical worker that is so respected by people.
