Mr. Chen Juwen was a 67-year-old retired maths teacher who lived in Jianyang City, Sichuan Province. He had been a teacher for more than 30 years at the Xinhe Centre School in Jianyang City. He started practising Falun Gong in March 1998. Only several days into his practise, his middle finger on his right hand, which had been disabled for 18 years, became normal and his illnesses all went away.

After July 20, 1999, he went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong. As a result, he was illegally detained for 15 days and was fined 5,900 Yuan [the average monthly income for an urban worer in China is 500 Yuan]. In the end of 1999, the local "610 Office" deceived him into going to the community office and then illegally detained him. Starting January 2000, his work unit stopped his pension. ["610 Office" - an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems].

Chen Juwen's wife is also a practitioner. On July 25, 1999, she was unjustly sentenced to 1.5 years of labour education. Her work unit also stopped her pension.

One night in 2001, police from the local "610 Office" broke into Chen Juwen's home, pushed him on the ground, and grabbed the picture of Mr. Li Hongzhi (founder of Falun Gong), which Mr. Chen kept at home. They then put him under watch 24 hours a day. They also frequently called his home to harass him. In order to avoid persecution, Mr. Chen managed to leave home and had to wander around. Despite the harsh condition, he still kept cultivating and clarifying the truth to people he met.

Due to the long-term persecution, Chen Juwen passed away on December 29, 2001.
