LONDON (EFGIC) – Mr. Hongping Chen, a Falun Gong practitioner from Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province died last month after a year and a half of torture and abuse.

On June 10, 2001, Mr. Chen and his sister were arrested at the Donghuayuan Bus Station in Huailai County because they were openly discussing Falun Gong in public. The director and nine policemen of the Donghuayuan Police Station made the arrest.

According to sources familiar with the case, the police took the siblings to an outdoor “yard”. The police hung them both up by their wrists and then proceeded to beat them severely. These sources say that Mr. Chen was beaten until he spat up blood; his entire body was black and blue, and both his legs were broken.

After the beatings, the police sent Mr. Chen to the Huailai Detention Centre.

The next day, the director of the Beixinpu Town Police Station, Liu Yufeng, told Mr. Chen he would be sent home. However instead, Mr Chen was taken directly to the Gaoyang Labour Camp in Hebei Province, without any legal procedure.

It is not yet clear what happened to Mr. Chen’s sister.

At Gaoyang Labour Camp, the police and inmates continued to torture and abuse Mr. Chen because he refused to give up his beliefs in Falun Gong. He was also forced to continually watch anti-Falun Gong propaganda.

After one and a half years inside the labour camp, Mr. Chen was on the verge of death.

On January 29, 2003, the officials at Gaoyang Labour Camp sent Mr. Chen to the local hospital where he was diagnosed with a number of serious conditions. Gaoyang Labour Camp officials ordered a policewoman to send him home the same night, in an apparent attempt to avoid responsibility for his death.

Mr. Chen never recovered from his injuries and died on March 5, 2003.

Background

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa (about), is a practice of meditation and exercises with teachings based on the universal principle of “Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance.” It is a practise that was taught in private for thousands of years before being made public in 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi. Falun Gong has roots in traditional Chinese culture, but it is distinct and separate from other practises such as the religions of Buddhism and Taoism. Since its introduction in 1992, it quickly spread by word of mouth throughout China, and is now practised in over 50 countries.

With government estimates of as many as 100 million practising Falun Gong, China’s President Jiang Zemin outlawed the peaceful practise in July 1999 (report), fearful of anything touching the hearts and minds of more citizens than the Communist Party. Unable to crush the spirit of millions who had experienced improved health and positive life changes from Falun Gong, Jiang’s regime has intensified its propaganda campaign to turn public opinion against the practise while quietly imprisoning, torturing and even murdering those who practise it.

The European Falun Gong Information Centre has verified details of 654 deaths (reports / sources) since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999. Government officials inside China, however, report that the actual death toll is well over 1,600, while expert sources estimate that figure to be much higher. Hundreds of thousands have been detained, with more than 100,000 being sentenced to forced labour camps, typically without trial.
