Mr. Tong Ruiqing from Handan City, Hebei Province, was arrested by officers from the Nanle County Police Department when he went to a shop in Nanle County to buy fruit on July 10th. Later he was sentenced to one year of forced labour. His sister, Ms. Tong Cunshu, hired an attorney for him. On September 2nd, before she and the attorney were to meet with Mr. Tong, she was arrested by officers from the Nanle County Criminal Division. She is now held at the Daming County Detention Centre.

On September 2nd, Ms. Tong and the attorney went to the Nanle County Police Department to ask for her brother's release. After the attorney finished the paperwork at the Nanle County Police Department, they planned to go to the detention centre to visit Mr. Tong. After they left the police department, with the excuse of checking IDs, the police pulled Ms. Tong Cunshu from the vehicle she was in and dragged her into a police vehicle. The attorney was also forced into their vehicle. Then they were taken back to the police department.

The attorney asked the police officers, “Is it you that require them to hire attorneys? But why did you forcefully arrest her in front of so many people?” The police officers asked one officer from the Domestic Security Division to speak, “It was because she was listed as wanted when her husband Mr. Huang Jianling was arrested on August 5th, 2008.”

Later they asked those officers from Daming County Domestic Security Division to take her to the Daming County Police Department. It seemed that they had already planned everything ahead of time. Now Ms. Tong is being held at the Daming County Detention Centre. She is on a hunger strike to protest the persecution.

After her family heard this, they, along with her ninety-year-old mother, went to the Daming County Police Department to request her release. The officers there said, “We cannot manage this case. We have forwarded it to the city government agency. You can go ask them.” They planned to drive her mother away but her mother insisted on staying. Then they told two officers to drag her out and they threw her outside. Later, her family went to the police department to ask for her release. The door was locked and they were not allowed to enter.
