Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Dong Guiying from the Dongli District, Tianjin, was arrested at least nine times by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) between February 2000 and June 2006. The police severely persecuted her and she ended up in critical condition, eventually passing away on November 17th, 2009. Just before Ms. Dong died, the police even asked about her health, intending to arrest her again. The main persons responsible were Liu Qiang, Ma Yuqi, Han Junsheng, Han Ming, and Chang Wanxin.

Ms. Dong was 56 years old. Before practising Falun Gong, she suffered from various illnesses for years. She was so weak that whenever she had to go upstairs or downstairs her husband and son had to carry her. She couldn’t do any housework and had to be taken care of. Seeking to cure her illnesses, Ms. Dong tried to practise many qigongs, but none had any effect on her. In early 1999, Ms. Dong felt so fortunate to be given the Falun Gong book, Zhuan Falun. After reading it, she firmly believed that Falun Gong was the spiritual path she had been looking for. As a result of following the principles in Zhuan Falun to improve her moral character, she resolved many conflicts with her family members. Her health kept getting better and better, and she was able to do more and more housework. She knew that because she practised Falun Gong and followed the requirements that she and her family enjoyed a truly happy life.

On July 20th, 1999, however, the CCP began to persecute Falun Gong. In order to let people know the facts-that Falun Gong is good—Ms. Dong went to Beijing to appeal in February 2000. The police arrested her and subjected her to force-feeding. The police detained her for 40 days.

In January 2002, Dongli District Police Department officers Liu Qiang and Ma Yuqi, along with officers Han Junsheng, Han Ming, and others, broke into Ms. Dong's residence for the sixth time. Her residence was searched and her personal belongings were confiscated. Ms. Dong was sentenced to forced labour and sent to Banqiao Women’s Forced Labour Camp in Tianjin. While in the forced labour camp, Ms. Dong was forced to carry 110-pound beanbags, and was subjected to various forms of persecution by inmates who were assigned to monitor her every day. The guards and monitoring inmates didn’t allow her to sleep or speak, and often cursed and beat her. They forced her to listen to and read materials that slandered Falun Gong in an attempt to brainwash her. The harsh persecution caused Ms. Dong severe physical and psychological harm, causing her to have symptoms of severe illnesses. However, the guard ignored her poor health and transferred her to the Jianxin Forced Labour Camp in Tianjin. Ms. Dong was eventually diagnosed with a serious illness. The guards extorted 5,000 yuan1 from Ms. Dong’s family before releasing her for medical treatment.

When she was home recovering from her illness in August 2002, a group of policemen once again broke into her residence late at night. Zhang Liyong was among them. They dragged and shoved her, and took her to the local police station. The police were planning to send her back to the labour camp. Ms. Dong told them about the principle that good is rewarded with good, and evil meets with evil. However, the policemen beat her to the floor, injuring her stomach so severely that she was motionless, so she was transferred to the Hedong Hospital in Tianjin, where she had surgery. Following surgery, she was diagnosed with second-stage ovarian cancer.

While Ms. Dong was hospitalised, officials from the district police department and the forced labour camp sent several camp guards to the hospital to interrupt the treatment. The doctors there told the guards that she had only about six months to live. Hearing this, the guards left.

However, Ms. Dong did not stop practising Falun Gong after leaving the hospital and her physical condition soon improved. Hearing that she had recovered, the police harassed her again and arrested her. They kept returning and ransacking her home several more times before she passed away. Once, a police officer from the Dongli District Police Department arrested her. The officer slapped her face brutally and cursed and beat her to the ground, causing Ms. Dong to be hospitalised again.

On June 20th, 2006, officers Liu Qiang, Ma Yuqi, and Chang Wanxin picked up Ms. Dong’s son and forced him to open the door. Seven practitioners were studying the Falun Gong teachings in Ms. Dong's home and they were arrested. On July 20th, the Dongli District Court tried Ms. Dong and three other practitioners, attempting to sentence them to four years of imprisonment. Two months later, however, Ms. Dong’s serious illness recurred. The guards were worried that Ms. Dong might die and finally released her in order to evade responsibility.

Ms. Dong was a good person who followed the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. The CCP kept persecuting her because of her belief, causing her to pass away on November 17th, 2009. Many people who knew her lamented the tragedy upon learning about her unjust persecution and death.
