Ms. Shi Liangyu, 68, is a Falun Gong practitioner who lives in Shashi District of Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. Police agents arrested her several times in the past. Shashi Court officials sentenced her to eight years of imprisonment on September 20th, 2002. After being detained and tortured at Hubei Women's Prison, Ms. Shi was released. However, her physical health is very poor as a result of torture while she was detained. She is now completely blind and is unable to take care of herself.

Two agents (one of them with the surname Xie) from the Chaoyang Police Station went to Ms. Shi's home in mid-September 2001. The agents ransacked her home and confiscated her personal belongings. They arrested her and detained her at Shuishang Research Institute of the Yangtze River. More than 10 guards were assigned to watch and torture her.

Guard Li Zhenggang took 1,700 yuan1 in cash from Ms. Shi (1,000 yuan was later returned after a request from Ms. Shi's family). The guards handcuffed her to the heating pipes for 10 days. They did not allow her to wash or change clothes in the hot weather. Li Zhenggang and Guo Mingwen beat Ms. Shi and kicked her. Yang Yong shocked her with electric batons. Other guards participating in the torture included Chen Jinhua, Xu Zhongning, Liu Juhua, Hu Youcai and his daughter, and others.

Ms. Shi was then sent to the Jingzhou District Detention Centre and kept there for three months. After that, she was released on bail between December 27th, 2001 and September 20th, 2002.

Shashi Court officials sentenced Ms. Shi to eight years of imprisonment on September 20th, 2002. In addition, the court wrongfully extended her term by one week due to an error made when calculating the bail.

Ms. Shi was sent to Hubei Women's Prison (Division 2) in early December 2002. During the imprisonment, she was tortured both physically and mentally. She was deprived of sleep and harassed every day. Because Ms. Shi insisted on doing the Falun Gong exercises and refused to yield to their demands, the inmates followed the guards' instructions and often beat her. The inmates viciously grabbed her by the hair, yanking it out of her head. She was also force-fed twice.

Ms. Shi had been previously arrested after the persecution started in July 1999. She went to Beijing to appeal on February 28th, 2000, and was arrested by personnel from the Jingzhou City Liaison Office in Beijing. Yao Bao and a female official with the surname Fan searched her and took her cash. They then kept her for one month at the detention centre. After extorting money from her family, they released her.
Liu Juhua and other agents arrested Ms. Shi while she was walking along a road in late September 2000. They detained her for two months before releasing her.

After the extended detention, Ms. Shi has now returned home. She is blind and unable to take care of herself.
