Yan Xintong, an 11-year-old girl from Huadian City, Jilin Province, cried incessantly whenever she thought about her mother. Ms. Jiao Ling, Xintong's mother, has been detained many times because of her belief in Falun Gong. During these past eleven years, Xintong has endured much suffering.

When Ms. Jiao was in elementary school, she fell from a great height, causing her to lose consciousness for quite some time. She then suffered from a strange illness, and frequently had headaches and shied away from interacting with others. As her condition continued to deteriorate, Ms. Jiao's parents took her to many doctors to treat her, but her condition did not improve. When her mother was on the verge of a mental breakdown, she was fortunate to learn about Falun Gong. During the most difficult time of Ms. Jiao's life, she saw a glimmer of hope. Through practising Falun Gong, her illness disappeared and her health improved.

When Ms. Jiao was four months pregnant with Xintong, she went to the Beijing Appeals Office to peacefully appeal for Falun Gong on July 20th, 1999. Ms. Jiao was arrested and taken to Huadian City police station. Upon returning home, she continued to practise Falun Gong and was later arrested by officers from the Minghua Police Station in Huadian City. Xintong was still not born at the time. Ms. Jiao's home was ransacked by officers from the Huadian City police station, and they confiscated her Falun Gong books, new television, video recorder, and other personal belongings. Ms. Jiao also lost her job at the Postal Savings Bank in Huadian City.

Amidst all the turmoil in Ms. Jiao's life, Xintong was born in January 2000. Ms. Jiao was arrested again in November 2000, when Xintong was not even one year old. When Ms. Jiao finally returned home, the police still wanted to arrest her, and even put up a notice on the Internet. As a result, Ms. Jiao was forced to leave home in order to avoid being persecuted. Xintong's father was unable to withstand the prolonged persecution and divorced Ms. Jiao. Xintong then become homeless along with her mother.

Ms. Jiao was arrested by Yu Xiaoqiang and other police officers when she went to the market in Changshan City on April 23rd, 2010. While no one was at home, the officers broke into her house and ransacked it. They were not able to find any evidence of Falun Gong materials, so they confiscated a drawing of a fairy and lotus flower, which had been drawn by Xintong. At 11 p.m., Xintong was unaware of what had happened to her mother and waited alone in the dark for her. She knew that her mother's persistence in believing in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance was the right thing to do, and that the people who arrested her were in the wrong. She was only eleven years old, but every day after school she went to the police station to demand that Yu Xiaoqiang release her mother. Yu Xiaoqiang later had her taken to an orphanage.
