It's springtime again, and I thought of young Ms. Yang Zhaoying, who is still imprisoned.

Ms. Yang graduated with honours from the Dalian University of Foreign Languages. When the persecution of Falun Gong began, she went to Beijing's Tiananmen Square and shouted, "Falun Gong is good!" For this she was detained, and the college revoked her bachelor's degree.

Following graduation she worked in a Japanese joint-venture company and was widely recognized for her outstanding Japanese-Chinese translation skills. However, the authorities arrested her because she practised Falun Gong, and were going to send her to a forced labour camp. To avoid persecution, she jumped out of a police station window and was severely injured. Her lower body was paralysed. The doctor said she would never stand up again.

Once at home after the injury, without any treatment, simply by studying the Falun Gong teachings and practising the Falun Gong exercises, she was able to stand up again and walk, though one of her feet was numb. Many of her classmates who did not support her practice saw this miracle, came to understand the truth, and have now become supportive.

Ms. Yang opened a private English tutoring business and was very responsible to the students. All the parents liked her. She eventually found her love and was going to marry, but the night before their wedding, agents from the Chinese Communist Party arrested her practitioner fiancé and sentenced him to seven years in prison.

In her article, "Statement of an unmarried bride," she said, "Thousands of families in China are suffering the same plight - their family members were detained or even killed for practising Falun Gong. I have not had a chance to establish my own family, but I have already suffered the pain. I am more prone to believe that every person is kind-hearted, and that the people who have participated in the persecution committed wrongdoings against their will. I hope the police officers will have an opportunity to understand the truth, and break away from the persecution, so as to choose a bright future for themselves and their families."

Thinking of others amidst sufferings, these are a typical Falun Gong practitioner's kind thoughts.

The Chinese Communist Party arrested Ms. Yang and also sentenced her to seven years in prison. Under its ruling, a young woman with high morals, who is trying to become a better person, will lose her best years in prison.
