Ms. Sun Guilan, nearly 60 years old, was from Shangqiu, Henan Province. She was unjustly detained at the Shibalihe Women's Forced Labour Camp in Zhegnzhou and was kept in the camp beyond her detention term. The camp personnel forbade others to speak to Ms. Sun and ordered her to do heavy labour, which placed tremendous mental and physical pressure on her. One morning, she went early as usual to clean the toilets and she fainted next to a water pond outside the garage. She must have passed away because the camp personnel spread the rumour that she committed suicide because of guilt. Practitioners, however, investigated and found that she did not commit suicide but from the persecution of Zhengzhou Forced Labour Camp instead.

In July 2001, TV reporters and officials from the "610 Office" (1) came to visit with the purpose of inspecting and reporting on the camp's transformation rate. In order to welcome them for this visit, the camp guards ordered practitioners to work longer hours and perform more chores, such as cleaning windows, scrubbing floors and bricks and so forth. Everybody was exhausted. On July 15, Ms. Sun was told to scrub and sweep the ground that was right outside the third brigade's garage. At around 8:00 a.m., the very tense and overworked Ms. Sun fainted. Ms. Li Mengying, Zhao Xiurong and some members of the first brigade, who had just finished breakfast and were ready to enter the garage, were about 50 feet away from Ms. Sun. They watched the camp doctor trying to resuscitate her. After a while, she was carried away.

A few days later, the concerned practitioners asked the guards about Ms. Sun's condition. The guards replied that it was none of their business. After the practitioners persisted, Ji Jianfen finally answered that Ms. Sun was in the hospital. When they asked which hospital, Ji replied that she didn't know.

When Ms. Sun had been gone for over a week, Practitioners became very worried about her. The news of her disappearance spread quickly and practitioners were talking about it. On one occasion, Ren Yuanfang, the captain of the third brigade, got very angry at them. She looked at Ms. Ji Hong and asked, "What are you talking about?" She replied, "Ms. Sun Guilan is dead." Ren Yuanfang immediately recorded her name on a notebook and demanded, "Who told you this? Who else is talking about it?"

On July 25, 2001, the routine bi-monthly family visit began at 8:00 a.m. Some practitioners' family members told them that the July 18 newspaper reported: "Sun Guilan, a Falun Dafa practitioner in Shibalihe Women Forced Labour Camp, committed suicide by hanging herself because she wanted to guard Falun Dafa and resist the government. For fear of being punished, she took her own life." After hearing that, three practitioners immediately organized an investigation committee. They quickly found Ms. Ren Junyu, a practitioner who spent a lot of time daily with Ms. Sun, and talked to her. Ms. Ren with tears in her eyes and trembling hands immediately held my hands and said, "As long as you dare to expose this matter, I will testify if the officials launch an investigation!"

Here are the facts after the practitioners' investigation:

Prior to the incident, Ms. Sun and Ms. Ren slept next to each other and sat on the same bench to have meals every day. Ms. Sun left for work on July 15 and did not return to have meals with her again.

At dusk on July 15, Min Yumei, a policeman with the third brigade, came to see the team leader, Han Xin. They searched Ms. Sun's bed and found a journal. They took the journal to avoid leaving any evidence. Han Xin was promoted to a disciplinary officer of the second brigade because of her effort. Ms. Ren read some of Ms. Sun's journal. Ms. Sun had been "transformed" (2) in February at the brainwashing centre, and was then transferred to the Shibalihi Women Forced Labour Camp. She had fulfilled her camp term by May, but they didn't let her leave. In June the authorities released a group of people which included Ms. Meng Jing, and Ms. Jiang Huimin but not Ms. Sun. At the end of June, after such mental pressure, she became very ill. She had convulsions, dizziness, foam around her mouth, and was also incoherent. There were more than thirty eyewitnesses. Some called the police on duty but the police failed to do anything for her. In her journal, she stated that she was worried about her elderly mother who was home alone with no one to take care of her.

The practitioners verified the case, documented the information, and wrote a report to petitioned the upper judicial office for an investigation. They managed to send out the report with eight signatures.

On the afternoon of July 31, Wang Yan, the assistant camp director, Wang Hualuan, Ren Yuanfang and Ji Jianfen, captain and assistant captain of the third brigade, came to look for the three practitioners who submitted the petition. They took each of them to a room and interrogated each one individually about the petition. One practitioner asked: "Where is Sun Guilan?" Ji Jianfen, the assistant captain, said that she was dead. The practitioner asked, "How did she die?" Ji said, "She hanged herself." The practitioner asked, "Where?" Ji answered, "In the toilet of the big garage." She also said that she personally took down Ms. Sun's body. Afterwards, practitioners checked out the toilet: the ceiling was 16 feet high. Even if a 60-year old person could fly up that high, there was no hook at all for a rope. Wang Yan said, "Sun Guilan killed herself because she wished to guard Falun Dafa and resist the government. She was afraid of punishment, so she hanged herself." Ji Jianfen was promoted to a formal party member after Ms. Sun's death.

In August, they gave all illegally detained practitioners a physical examination. They released all those who were over 55 years old, the sick, and the ones that had their camp term extended.
