The Chinese Lantern Festival is an occasion for family reunion. However, thousands of Falun Gong practitioners in China are illegally detained and unable to get together with their families. Among them are the relatives of many overseas practitioners. Bao-lian Zhu, the sister of a London practitioner, Bao-sheng Zhu was sentenced to four years in jail because of her firm belief in Falun Gong. Zhu Yongjie, the fiancée of Cambridge resident Dr. Weiguo Xie, was unlawfully kidnapped by the National Security Bureau in Beijing last year. Thus far, no one has any information on her whereabouts.

On one hand, Falun Gong practitioners used their artistic talent to introduce the traditional Chinese lantern festival to the British people. On the other hand, the artistic performances served as a means to expose large-scale human rights violations in China.
