Sister of British citizen held in Labour Camp

European resident: Jane (Jian Hong) Liang (female, British citizen)

Name of Victim: Miss Wenjian Liang

Description:

Ms. Jian Hong Liang's sister, Miss Wenjian Liang, was arrested and taken to the Chaitou Xiaodao labour education camp in Guangzhou, without a warrant, on 23 February 2000 when she reported to the local police station (as she was required to do everyday). Later she was sentenced to two years of forced labour without trial or reason. Following her detention in the labour camp, their mother, who lived in the UK, became very ill. She was taken to hospital in March. In May her illness became critical. Jane wrote to the Chinese authority asking them to release her sister so that she could see her mother in the UK but did not receive a reply. Their mother eventually died on 7 June 2000 without seeing her daughter.

On 2 November 2000, she went to the Chinese Embassy in London to apply for a visa to visit China, which was her first visa application to the Embassy since Falun Gong was banned in China in July 1999. The purpose of her trip was to deal with family matters after her mother's death and to visit her family as well as her sister in the labour camp. However, she was refused a visa.
