Poem: In My Heart, At Your Side

I know that you are over yonder in a country oh so large
That your heart beats as does mine, that in your body there flows blood
We share thoughts about the meaning of life – to exist to do good
To live as whole people in truthfulness, compassion, tolerance

We are so close to one another, yet a continent separates us
In my heart I am at your side, I want to share that which weighs you down
On your tender shoulders a heavy yoke of hatred has been placed
An evil that wishes for your death, the dark grave of the holocaust

Of lies and fear a wall has been built around your life and country
Within are heard the screams of the terrible pain of torture and the children’s lonely cries
But the sparkling facade of the wall has made people deaf and blind
No one wants to hear the cries for help, no one dares to listen

But slowly the facade is cracking; the light of the truth is shining forth
No person is unaffected any longer, offering a hand to help you
In my heart I am at your side, walk the road together all the way to the end of the terror
A new day will be born when the evil does not exist, when people’s true nature bursts into full blossom

Then we will rejoice with one another in truthfulness, compassion, tolerance
