Mr. Guy Verhofstadt
Belgian Prime Minister
Wetstraat 16, rue de la Loi
B-1000 Brussels

Your Excellency Mr. Prime Minister,

My name is Zhao Ming. I am a postgraduate student studying computer science at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland. I was put in a labour camp in a Beijing suburb for nearly two years and tortured badly because of being a Falun Gong practitioner. Now I am in Brussels during a tour around Europe to share my experience and raise people’s awareness of the persecution occurring in China. I hand in this letter to you in the hope that my experiences could be helpful for you to know more about the exact situation in China.

In the labour camp, the police guards tried to brainwash me using various torture methods including sleep deprivation, beatings, electric shocks and physical punishment like forcing me to squat for a long time etc. Two weeks before I was released this year, 5 policemen bound me on a bed board and shocked me with 6 electric batons all over my body simultaneously. The shocking made my body jump and tremble very violently. One of my legs went into spasm. The shocks on my chest made me breath very hurried. My throat was also dry as if burning. And the mental harm from this electric shocking was very immense. I felt very nervous and it was difficult to go to sleep for a long period after that. During a period of two weeks, the police guards forced me to squat for over ten hours a day, which made my lower legs and feet numb, and now I still suffer from a lack of feeling there. The police once dictated 10 inmates in the labour camp to beat me up. They punched me and kneed me violently. I was not able to walk for several weeks after that.

I was released in March this year due to the efforts of many people in the international community including the Irish Premier, Irish Foreign Minister, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Mary Robinson, Lord Moyne of the UK, the French Education Minister Mr. Jack Lang, some Members of the European Parliament, Amnesty International (especially the Belgian section) etc...other practitioners who are not known by the outside world are suffering even more. The number of Falun Gong practitioners tortured to death has been increasing every week.

I am a science student who practices Falun Gong to improve my life. I am not interested in politics. And I have not done anything illegal. I found that the policemen in the labour camps also knew this, and they knew that the torture they did was illegal. But they still did it. The police did this solely to have us sign a paper renouncing Falun Gong. This is too evil and inhumane... Now Jiang Zemin’s regime is persecuting Falun Gong only because Falun Gong is good and has attracted too many people. They are jealous of this.

During this tour, I have been to Denmark, France and Germany. I met with NGOs and government officials and was interviewed by media in each place. I have found that people in the west do not know the truth of the persecution in China in detail because the Jiang regime has been propagating lies through media and diplomatic channels.

During the three years of persecution, we have only peacefully appealed and no Falun Gong practitioner has done anything violent, despite the tortures and killings that we have endured. These three years has proven that we are completely peaceful and not a threat to anyone.

In the labour camp I also found that Jiang’s regime was spending huge amount of money, gained from taxpayers and foreign trade, to persecute innocent people. This will ultimately harm not only Chinese people but also foreign investors and traders. This persecution of Falun Gong is being condemned by more and more governments and people.

Mr. Prime Minister, I, on behalf of the tens of millions of people persecuted in China, sincerely request that you could investigate this issue, take firm actions to support the justice and urge the Chinese government to stop the persecution immediately. I also hope that you could raise this issue during the European Council meeting on 24th, 25th Oct 2002,. Thank you very much.

Sincerely Yours
Zhao Ming
