The Torture I Experienced in Liaoning Province Women's Prison

On April 12th, 2003, I was reported to the police as a Falun Gong practitioner and was arrested. I was detained in the Fuxing Detention Centre, Liaoning Province. In March 2004 I was sentenced to four years imprisonment and transferred from Fuxing Detention Centre to Liaoning Province Women's Prison.

I experienced and witnessed many types of torture used to persecute Falun Gong practitioners: sleep deprivation, physical punishment, in winter pouring freezing cold water over the naked body, constant beatings, sleeping on a hard board, not being allowed to use the toilet, no toilet paper, confiscating food and everyday goods, confiscating money, being hung up, gagged, stuffed into a box, and the list goes on. Force-feedings with unknown drugs made several practitioners develop mental disorders. The torture caused numerous disabilities.

Torturing Me to Make Me Renounce Falun Gong

I was assigned to the Second Team of the Second Brigade when I arrived. On the first day, guards Shi Jinghe and Sun Yuanyuan instigated prisoners to beat me and tried to force me to "confess." I said that practising Falun Gong is not a crime, that following Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is not a crime. I tried to talk to them. Inmates Ma Ning, Chen Qili, and Dong Yuezhen hit me in the face, kicked me, and cursed me. They did not allow me to sleep at night. During the day they were always there, forcing me to work harder and longer. They used various methods of torture until I could not take it anymore and signed their statements denouncing Falun Gong.

Unknown Drugs Made Me Unable to Think or Concentrate

In November 2006, I could no longer withstand the relentless hard labour and started a hunger strike in protest. Guard Shi Jing watched while inmates dragged me to the hospital. I was given an injection and began speaking incoherently and had terrifying hallucinations. I lost the ability to think and started talking nonsense. My vision became blurred. They said I was stubborn and increased the dose of the drug. I could not concentrate and fainted. Later they took me back to the prison cell, taking away my paper and pens. They did not allow me to go to the toilet. Inmate Yi Zhenjun kicked me and beat me. Inmate Zhou Lili put more of the drug into some milk and tried to force me to drink it. I refused and she poured the milk over my head.

The Cell Leader Tried to Force Me to "Donate" My Organs

One day, I became very drowsy after a meal and fell asleep. There are strict rules that say inmates are not allowed to sleep during the day, but that day they let me. I was woken up when the other inmates returned in the evening. Then cell leader Wang Huijuan came and told me, "The leader of the Brigade is coming to see you." So I stood up and was told, "The Brigade leader wants you to donate." I refused to answer and they finally left. Two days later two policewomen from the Prison Policy Office came. One of them, named Ma, asked me, "Do you have any financial difficulties at home?" I did not answer. The other policewoman held up four fingers and asked ."How many fingers?" I replied. "Four". Then she held up two fingers and asked. "How many?" I did not answer, so they left. After I thought about what they said, I realised they were asking me to donate my organs. I could not take it quietly anymore. I shouted "Falun Gong is good!" Inmate Zhou Lili and cell leader Wang Huijuan dragged me into a room and stripped me naked. They poured cold water all over me and would not allow me to use the toilet. I lost control of my bowels. They returned me to the prison cell at seven or eight o'clock in the evening. Inmate Sun Lijie came over to curse me and kick my head.

Deception Failed

One night an inmate quietly told me that, if I was taken away, I would not come back. Later that night the guards came and ordered me to dress and follow them. They said they were taking me to a hospital outside the prison for medical help. I was scared. What could they want to do in the middle of the night? I shouted, "Falun Gong is good! I won't go. I won't go. Falun Gong is good! Falun Gong is good!" They finally left.

One time when I was saying, "Falun Gong is good," the inmates taped my mouth closed and tied me to a piece of heating equipment. It took me a long time to recover and I could not talk afterwards.

This is only what I can recall, just a small sample of what goes on in the Liaoning Province Women's Prison. There are still many Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted there.

The Liaoning Province Women's Prison is located in a northwestern suburb of Shenyang City. It has eleven wards (also called brigades). Each brigade has several teams. Falun Gong practitioners are spread throughout each team, so there are four or five practitioners surrounded by everyday criminals. There are about 20 guards for each brigade except the Fifth Brigade. Over 200 guards are directly involved in the daily persecution of practitioners. Over 10 other people, including prison leaders and officials, are also directly or indirectly involved in the persecution that takes place in this prison.

The hierarchy in a prison is: Director, Vice-Director, Prison Policy Office, Brigade Leader and then Vice-Leader of Brigade. The lowest level is the guards.

Between August and September of 2007 all female practitioners arrested in Liaoning Province were sent to this prison.

Those involved in persecution:

Fang Suxia, vice director of the prison
Guards in the Second Brigade: Dong Yuexin, Sun Yuanyuan, Shi Jing, Li Jing
Guards in the Eighth Brigade: Zuo Xiaoyan, vice leader of the brigade; Li Xiaohong; Jiao Lingling; Zhang Lei; Wang Ling; Liu Qili; Guo Guijie; Zhang Jian

Inmates involved in persecution:

Zhou Lili, Liu Min, Liu Xiaowei, Chen Qili, Wang Xiuyun, Sun Lijie (who tortured a Falun Gong practitioner to death), Sun Yuwen, Yi Zhenjun, Wang Huijuan, Wang Hongyan, Sun Yan, Yan Lijie, Ma Ning, Yan Guifang, Qi Shuhai, Dong Yuezhen, Zhao Feng, Shi Yuwen, Nie Chunling, Gong Yufeng
