Ms. Kan Jixiang, a 48-year old Falun Gong practitioner, lives in Jinqianguan Village, Tanpu Town, Mengyin County, Shandong Province. Police arrested her at the Linyi bus station in January 2010 and took her to a brainwashing centre under directions from the Linyi City 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong). Several people were involved in abusing her, including brainwashing centre head Song Wei and Chen Hai, Su Wei, Zhao Hongbing, and Zhao Tianyu.

Ms. Kan's husband went to visit her on March 2nd, 2010. She recognised him, but no one else. Her husband asked to bring her home, but Linyi City 610 Office agents denied his request.

The staff at the brainwashing centre said Ms. Kan's husband had not disciplined her well in the past.

Her husband related that, prior to practising Falun Gong, Ms. Kan was in poor health, suffering from tracheitis, asthma, dizziness, pain in the back and legs. She was unable to take care of herself and sometimes could not get out of bed. They had three children, including young twins. Ms. Kan's husband had to take care of her and hold the twins at the same time. When Ms. Kan was unhappy, she cried and complained, fighting with her husband and her mother-in-law. Although her husband was a carpenter, he could not earn a living because he had to stay at home to take care of the family, cook and do other household chores. In addition, he had to spend their savings to have his wife's illnesses treated. It was a very difficult time because of the family's poverty and the wife's bad mood. The children's health was not good, either. Once Ms. Kan began Falun Gong practice, all her illnesses disappeared, and the entire family benefited from it. She was respectful of her mother-in-law, and they got along well with each other. Her husband was also able to earn a living. They were happy, and the family was harmonious.

The communist regime officials ignored the plight of Ms. Kan and her family when times were tough. When her family benefited from her practising Falun Gong, however, the regime officials began to interfere. They have harassed her more than ten times in the past decade, although all she did was follow the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

At about 6:00 a.m. on December 21st, 2000, Wu Gang from Tanpu Town Police Station and three other people deceived Ms. Kan and took her to the police station. They beat her and slapped her in the face without comments. They forced her to sit on the floor, with her legs out straight and holding her toes. Later on they left her outside in the snow.

Gaoxinqu Police Department agents in Luozhuang, Linyi City arrested her on March 7th, 2002, and subjected her to one year of forced labour. She was deprived of sleep at the labour camp and brainwashed with slander and lies day and night. She could not stand still because of the mental torment. She lost her balance when she tried to walk and was in a trance. She ended up mentally impaired. The camp officials sent her to a mental hospital for an evaluation. Seeing that she was in such poor condition, the police had to release her.

Right before May 1st, 2005, two people from the Tanpu City 610 Office went to Ms. Kan's home and demanded to know if she still practised Falun Gong. They also said that the regime forbids Falun Gong practice. Ms. Kan said, "I practise Falun Gong at home and do not bother anyone. Nonetheless, I have been persecuted many times in the past few years." The two people said they had just come for a visit and that there was nothing to be concerned about. Ms. Kan said, "I was very sick in the past, but no one visited me. Now, after practising Falun Gong, I have good health, but I have been constantly harassed."

The morning of March 17th, 2009, Menyin County 610 Office and Tanpu Town personnel went to Ms. Kan's home. After first climbing over the wall and going in for a quick look, they ordered the village Party secretary to force open the door. Even though no one was at home, they ransacked the house. Many personal belongings, totalling about 10,000 yuan1, were confiscated, including a laptop computer, three MP3 players, two printers, and one DVD recorder.

Ever since Linyi City Brainwashing Centre was established in January 2002, many practitioners have been persecuted there. To keep it going, officials often have to hire new staff. After these people find out the facts about Falun Gong, they are replaced.
