At around 2:00 p.m. on October 27th, 2004, two vans, one red and one white, stopped in front of Ms. Hao's home. A dozen people, led by a man (Wu Xinghai) and a woman (Zhao Meiying) from the Shiliting Town government, rushed from the vans and ransacked the house. They seized 230 yuan1 in cash, which the impoverished family had managed to save for their winter heating coal. Several men dragged Ms. Hao from the house, covered her mouth, punched and kicked her, and threw her into the van. Her five-year-old daughter, crying and following her mother, was also thrown into the van.

Ms. Hao was held at the Xingtai Brainwashing Centre for two months, where she was injected with unidentified drugs several times. She became mentally disoriented, and lost the ability to work and to take care of herself. After a lengthy struggle in poor health, she finally died at 5:00 a.m. on March 25th, 2010.
