Two Examples Of Severe Persecution In Shanghai

1. Zhou Bin, male, 35 years old:

On January 18, 2001, officers from the Changning District Police Department illegally arrested Mr. Zhou at home. They sentenced him to 12 years in prison because they found 20,000 copies of Falun Gong truth-clarifying literature in his home. While detained at the Changning District Detention Centre in Shanghai, Zhou Bin was subjected to inhumane torture. He was locked in isolation, and his hands were cuffed behind the back for a long time [he was subjected to a special, very painful way of handcuffing.] Because of the beatings he received, his head, face, nose and ears were all injured to varying degrees. His collarbone was broken, and his thighs, stomach and kidneys were wounded. Therefore, from September to December 2001, Zhou Bin was sent to the jail's hospital, where he remained for 3 months. Then he was transferred to Tilanqiao Prison in Shanghai.

The police illegally confiscated property of his that was worth around 30,000 Yuan [The approximate monthly salary for an average urban worker is 500 Yuan] without giving him a receipt. They claimed that they sent his property to the court, but officials of the court said that they knew nothing about it. The location of the money remains a mystery.

2. Xiong Wenqi, male, 30 years old, college level education:

On May 3, 2001, the police forcibly took Mr. Xiong from his home in the Yangpu District of Shanghai City. In the detention centre, he refused to cooperate […], and refused to answer any questions. His family members were told that he could only rely upon forcible injection to sustain his life. It is likely that this situation has remained unchanged to this day.

On January 28, 2002, the Yangpu Procuratorate twisted the law and "sued" Xiong Wenqi. Then the Yangpu District Court illegally sentenced Xiong Wenqi to 4.5 years in prison. Xiong Wenqi then issued an appeal against the illegal sentence. On March 5, 2002, Shanghai City's No. 2 Intermediate Court directly tried him without notifying his family members in advance, so that they would not be present in court. Because it was a secret trial, the result is unknown.

His so-called "crime" was: sharing experiences with other Falun Gong practitioners at the end of December 2000. Thus, Xiong went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. (On May 14, 2000, Xiong Wenqi was illegally detained in Beijing, and then was forcibly taken back to Shanghai. Afterwards, he was illegally sentenced to 2 years of forced labour "re-education." He went on a hunger strike to resist the persecution. In October 2000, he was released on bail for medical treatment. He openly and righteously walked out of the forced labour camp.)
We appeal to the international community to give him support and pay close attention to this matter.
