On Tuesday, February 13th, the opening night of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular began at 8pm in Duisburg. Around fifty male and female artists performed a breathtaking, colourful and touching performance for the entire family and brought to the audience a touch of the true and profound Chinese culture. “Unlike other shows, the Shen Yun show brings different harmonic vibrations to the audience,” said Melanie Rechau. “I felt to be in a truly pure environment, just like in ancient China. Overall, it was very charming and pristine.”

“After the show I realised again the true vastness of China, how many regions there are, and how little I really know about it,” said the designer, silversmith and teacher Andrea G. Wagner. The show took its audience into a magical word ruled by Buddhas, Daos, Gods and heavenly fairies. Besides, the show gave a glimpse into the dances and the different characteristics of the various Chinese ethnic groups.

“The show was so multifaceted with its colourful costumes and a broadly arranged programme. I belief that this was very interesting to the audience,” said Uwe Gerste, Director at Duisburg Marketing, about the European Shen Yun opening night in Duisburg. “I never delved that much into the Chinese culture. I must admit it is from what I saw interesting, especially from what I saw in such a house of culture, including the cultural medley that is very important towards a better understanding of a culture.” He liked the “Drummers of the Tang Court” the most.

Melanie Rechau found it great that much emphasis was given to the ancient history of China. “After the show I could understand why the Chinese government does not want this type of information passed to its citizen. No wonder, considering how China’s regime is treating its citizens. It is just like it was shown today,” referring to two scenes that depicted the persecution of Falun Gong.

Vivian Weidner, student, was very touched by the scenes. “I was impressed by the dances that depicted the persecution of Falun Gong in China. Through this I could understand a little how the Falun Gong practitioners in China feel and the empathy they have concerning what is happening there.” Her sister Jennifer had not heard about the persecution of Falun Gong and was ignorant about the incidents.
“I think that these dances truly support the immergence of human rights in China. This is a message that truly awakens people,” said Jennifer.
