Maastricht (ANP) - The religious movement Falun Gong which is forbidden in China has started a campaign to inform the Dutch public about the persecution it has been exposed to in China. "SOS!" the flyers and posters are calling out to the reader.

The flyer tells about the persecution the Chinese government has launched against the movement in July 1999. "Your help is urgently needed to save the Falun Gong practitioners that are persecuted in China", the text says. "Many innocent lives are at stake". The reader is encouraged to write protest letters to politicians and the Chinese embassy.

The Foundation [Falun Gong Foundation Netherlands] organises an information evening about the movement for the first time in Roosendaal on the 23rd of January. Falun Gong combines physical exercises with meditation techniques and ideas from Buddhism and Taoism [editiorial clarification- Buddha and Tao Schools rather than the religions of Buddhism and Taoism], with the goal of bringing the person more and more in line with Zhen-Shan-Ren (truth-compassion-forbearance), the basic principle of the universe.

According to Houben in The Netherlands there are only about several dozens of practitioners. Worldwide there are more then 100 million according to Falun Gong.
