Zhan Jinyan, female, was a resident of Yinzhuang Village in Baoding City's Jiangcheng Township, Hebei Province. She went to Beijing to appeal for Dafa in the evening of November 26, 2001 and was illegally detained by personnel from the Yanqing County Police Department in Beijing. On November 29, authorities from Jiangcheng Township's government notified Zhan Jinyan's family to visit her while she was being given emergency care in the Yanqing County Hospital. She was on the verge of death at the time and passed away just 3 days later.

It was said that authorities from the Yangqing County Police Department wanted to settle this case privately by compensating the family with 3,000 Yuan [about US$350, the average monthly income in rural China is about $25] plus covering the medical and funeral costs. Beijing City's Police Department learned of this plan and did not approve of the way the County police department wanted to handle it. Currently, Zhan Jinyan's body is still in Yanqing County Hospital's morgue, and nothing has been resolved yet.

People from Zhan Jinyan's village and her family members agree that she was a very good and kind person. She just went to Beijing to say, "Falun Dafa is good" and to clarify the truth to people. This is her basic right as a human being. People from the police department, however, arrested her for doing so. In just a few days, an energetic, healthy person died without explanation or visible wounds. She was just in her 20s and the mother of a 2-year-old son. We hope that related organizations and righteous people from all walks of life will assist with the investigation of the murder of Zhan Jinyan, to bring the killers to justice and to stop these kind of tragedies from ever occurring again.
