1. Ms. Chen Chuanying (60 years old)

Ms. Chen Chuanying is from Shangpu residential group in Shapu Village, Yueyang, Hunan Province. Ms. Chen started to cultivate in Falun Dafa in 1998. She went to Beijing to clarify the truth for Falun Dafa in 2001 and was arrested, and then detained in Pingjiang Detention Centre for 35 days. While incarcerated there, she tried to practise Falun Gong with fellow practitioners, but the prison guards threatened to stop the practice with electric batons. Female prison guard Chen Meihua even forced them to do sit-ups, push-ups, and stand for a long time as punishment. As an elderly Dafa practitioner over 60 years old, Ms. Chen suffered from the police's personal insults and abuse, and was finally released under police custody after 35 days of torture. Moreover, the police had illegally ransacked her home, and given her an illegal fine of 5,000 Yuan [approximately a 10-month salary for an average urban worker.] However, would a poor farming family like Ms. Chen's be able to come up with such a large sum of money? Ms. Chen's husband fell into the depths of despair and almost committed suicide to escape the fine. Under the police's coercion and threats, he had no choice but to borrow money from friends and relatives. The police had also harassed them at home, and repeatedly ransacked their home. They wouldn't give Ms. Chen's family a moment of peace.

2. Ms. Zou Siying (52 years old)

Ms. Zou Siying is from Cenchuan Village, Pingjiang County, Hunan Province. As of February 2004, Ms. Zou has been cultivating in Falun Dafa for over seven years. Since Jiang Zemin started to openly persecute Falun Dafa on July 20, 1999, Ms. Zou has never faltered in her belief in Falun Dafa, neither has she said anything against her conscience about Falun Dafa. She has travelled to Beijing twice to clarify the truth about Falun Dafa, and was thus illegally sentenced to two years in a forced labolr camp, where she endured the most insufferable tortures. The Yuping Village Police Station repeatedly abducted Ms. Zou, put her in shackles, and paraded her through streets to humiliate her in public. They also subjected her to brutal beatings. Since Ms. Zou came out of the forced labour camp, she continues to clarify the truth about Falun Dafa and expose the facts of persecution against Falun Dafa.

One morning in October of 2003, the Yuping Village Police Station fanatically broke into and ransacked her home again. They confiscated her Falun Dafa articles and truth-clarification materials, and took her to the police station. On that afternoon, the police tied Ms. Zou Siying with a rope and made a farmer keep hitting the gong (a traditional Chinese percussion instrument) aloud while they paraded Ms. Zou bound in rope through the streets. On that evening, the policemen interrogated her with cruel torture. Policeman Liu Dengke and five of his accomplices together crushed her back with a wooden chair. They kept trampling and pressing on the wood chair with their feet until they were worn out and short of breath. Ms. Zou Siying said to them, "I am a person of morality who cultivates according to the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. You must understand that Falun Dafa is good and the government is wrong to persecute Falun Dafa. You will meet with retribution for your crimes." Policeman Liu Dengke replied, "Even if I should meet my retribution and die tomorrow, I will torture her to death today." They kept torturing her until late into the night and they finally put her in an empty room with nothing but a stone bench. In the middle of the freezing winter, Ms. Zou wore nothing but two thin tops for the upper-body. Moreover, her entire body was covered with wounds. Liu Dengke had even nicked her eyebrow area severely with a book. The next morning, policemen roughly brushed her face with a broom, causing additional cuts and additional pain to her existing injuries. Then they handcuffed her hands behind her back, and took her to the county detention centre. By the time they arrived at the detention centre, Ms. Zou had lost her ability to walk. She ended up being brought into the detention centre by several people. She was covered with mud and dirt. Her hair was stiff and messy, and she looked as horrible as the tortures rendered upon her. There were eight other Dafa practitioners incarcerated in the county centre at the time. They were heartbroken when they saw Ms. Zou. She was kept in the detention centre until early February of 2004.

3. Ms. Tang Xiaomei (49 years old)

Ms. Tang was an employee at the Dajiangdong Electricity Office in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province. Ms. Tang started to cultivate in Falun Dafa in October 1997. She suffered from cruel persecution because she clarified the truth about Falun Dafa after Jiang Zemin started to openly persecute Falun Gong on July 20, 1999. In October 2001 Mr. Li Sansheng, the Assistant Director of Dajiangdong Electricity Office, ordered employees to write messages on the wall to slander Falun Dafa. Ms. Tang Xiaomei stood up and tried to stop him. She said, "Falun Dafa is the Buddha Fa. It is the salvation of mankind. You have been deceived by Jiang Zemin and his henchmen." Mr. Li Sansheng refused to listen, and summoned the county's State Security Brigade. They abducted her and ransacked her home. Ms. Tang Xiaomei was illegally detained in Pingjiang County Detention Centre for 37 days. During the incarceration, Ms. Tang persisted in practising the Falun Gong exercises and was punished by being handcuffed for three days and three nights, being "Locked in a Small Cell"* for three days, and having cold water poured over her three times. She was later released after her relative had paid the police the so-called "fine" of 1,000 Yuan and over 400 Yuan for meals in the detention centre. [500 Yuan is the average monthly income for an urban worker in China.]

* Locked in a Small Cell: A small cell is a room of less than three square meters. It has no window, no bed, no water, and no toilet. A victim is locked in a small cell for months, having to eat, sleep, and excrete in the same small area. Since the height of the room is less than 1.5 meters, one cannot stand straight. To exacerbate the agony, the guards often handcuff the victim in the small cell door so the victim cannot sleep for many days.

In August 2002 the police arrested Ms. Tang Xiaomei at her home and ransacked her home again. During the process, the police even smashed the doors in her home. While in the State Security Brigade's custody, Ms. Tang was subject to interrogation that lasted four days and four nights. During the interrogation, the police kept her from sleeping and sitting, and tried to force her to stand or kneel down in front of them. When Ms. Tang refused to kneel down, policeman Li Jianzhou beat her savagely with a baton. He even poked at Ms. Tang's neck and asked, "Are you kneeling or not?" "I will only kneel to my Teacher." Then he switched to an even thicker baton and started to beat her again. Ms. Tang Xiaomei started to send forth righteous thoughts. Thirty minutes later, the policemen became less fierce. Ms. Tang repeatedly tried to clarify the truth about Falun Gong to them, but they claimed that they had to follow Jiang Zemin's order and the "610 Office's" documents, otherwise they would be fired. [Note: The "610 Office" is a Gestapo-like agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the Party and all other political and judiciary systems. Due to pressure from the international community, the Chinese Communist government has renamed the "610 Office" on October 15, 2003, and lied to the world, stating that the "610 Office" has been "disbanded."]

This time Ms. Tang was incarcerated for nearly seven months, until February 27, 2003. She was also forced to pay 1,000 Yuan for meals during the illegal detention. In addition, the Nanjiang Town government went to her work unit and extorted 1,500 Yuan in the name of a fine from her employer. Originally, one of her children was eligible to start working for her employer when she left work in 2000. However, because Ms. Tang refused to stop cultivating in Falun Dafa, her employer denied her child the job opportunity at the office. On November 4, 2003 Pingjiang County's State Security Brigade, Nanjiang Police Station, and Nanjiang Town government sent policemen to ransack her home again, and took her to the Pingjiang County Detention Centre for 30 days of detention. During the incarceration, the prison guard Chen Meihua put handcuffs and shackles on Ms. Tang and subjected her to torture.
