METRO [UK newspaper]: Protest greets Chinese leader

1 Nov. 2001

Chinese vice president Hu Jintao arrived in Scotland yesterday on the latest leg of his five-day visit to Britain.

The statesman, who is tipped as a future leader of China, was greeted with protests by around 30 people from members of Falun Gong, who gathered at Edinburgh’s Botanic Garden …

The group believes in a peaceful exercise and meditation system for the mind, body and spirit, and members put on a short display as the vice president walked by.

They were protesting about the Chinese Government’s decision to ban Falun Gong in 1999, accusing the leadership of “horrendous oppression”.
