On May 23rd 2003, the Swedish Falun Gong Information Centre and Falun Gong practitioners from Gothenburg organised a press conference to tell the people of Sweden about the arrest of Gothenburg citizen Mrs. Pirjo Svensson, who is currently imprisoned in Bangkok.

The Gothenburg City Museum allowed practitioners to use their hall free of charge. Practitioners gave Sweden’s media the latest information concerning Pirjo, including her personal statement. Practitioners also talked about Jiang Zemin’s persecution of Falun Gong in China and his crimes against humanity for which he is being sued for in Europe and the USA. Practitioners revealed the lies from China’s state-run media about the self-immolation and showed a video on this subject that has been recently produced by the WOIPFG (World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong).

Among those present were journalists from Gothenburg Post, the biggest newspaper in Gothenburg, and the regional TV station Västnytt (West News), which broadcasts to the Southwest of Sweden. The Chairman of Sweden’s Association for Human Rights was also at the press conference and showed great enthusiasm. He asked several questions and revealed that he hopes to begin working together with Falun Gong practitioners to end the persecution in China. He said at the press conference that before he was invited he felt sceptical about Falun Gong, but the more he learned, the more he realised that Falun Gong is good.

A report was shown that evening on both local and national TV stations. This included a section from Bangkok featuring an interview with a friend of Pirjo. The Swedish Ambassador, Jan Nordlander, was also interviewed and stated, “We think that the measures that have been taken against Pirjo, the cancellation of her residency permit, and her being placed in custody by immigration are illegal. We fear that this has happened because of her religious and philosophical conviction and this is not acceptable from our point of view.”

Positive and informative articles were also published in the Gothenburg Post and Dagens Nyheter (News of the Day), the biggest morning newspaper in Sweden.
