Inside the Labour Camps

  • Persecution at the Tumuji Forced Labour Camp in Inner Mongolia

Former Tongliao Elementary School teacher Ms. Wang Ying, Ms. Wan Xiuying's daughter, was tortured by being hung up by the handcuffs, beaten with clubs, shocked with two high-voltage electric batons, and beaten by multiple people simultaneously. She was eventually crippled by the abuse she suffered. A CT scan indicated that she had contracted myocarditis, and the torture she suffered also resulted in her loss of hearing. She was released only when she was on the verge of death, even though she had been crippled for a long period of time.
  • Chongqing Women's Labour Camp Trains Prisoners to Violently Persecute Falun Gong Practitioners

In the first half of 2007, the Chongqing Women's Labour Camp trained "personal monitors" (drug addicts assigned to persecute Falun Gong practitioners) in techniques for choking practitioners and striking practitioners' heads with their fists. The camp authorities even tested the criminal inmates on this training. When all else is quiet at night, one can always hear noise from the beatings in the labour camp. Falun Gong practitioner Zhao Fengxia (about 30 years old) could not speak for a couple of months after being beaten. Her facial expression was very stiff and awkward. Although she can talk now, her speech is very slow and slurred.
  • The Persecution in Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp

Under orders from Warden Wang Kai, inmates tortured practitioners in their cells: they beat practitioners with a wooden bed board and hit their faces with slippers. Liu Jingzhou's face got swollen and disfigured from this treatment. Zhang Fa, a 60-year-old practitioner, had an attack of high blood pressure as a result of the torture. Gu Qingsong's leg was broken. One practitioner was beaten until he fell to the floor, but the inmates wouldn't stop abusing him, saying that he was faking. Gong Wenyi was forced to sit on an Iron Chair for 14 days while he was on a hunger strike to protest the persecution.
  • Hebei Province Women's Forced Labour Camp Unjustly Detains Over 150 Falun Gong Practitioners

The Hebei Province Women's Forced Labour Camp is still holding over 150 female Falun Gong practitioners. It's been reported that Falun Gong practitioner Liu Qiaozhen has been on a hunger strike for over three months and is now critically ill. Practitioner Qiu Liying attended a trial hearing for practitioner Li Qiumin on September 26th, 2007. Qiu Liying was taken to the Hebei Province Brainwashing Centre the next work day, transferred to a labour camp after ten days, sentenced to one year of forced labour, and she is currently detained in Brigade No. 1 of the Hebei Province Women's Forced Labour Camp.
  • Crimes Against Older Falun Dafa Practitioners in Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp

For many years, the No. 4 Team of Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province has been the place where older Falun Dafa practitioners are persecuted. I am in my 60s. Around March 20th, 2006, I was ordered to take a blood test. I was thinking then that I was not a sick person since I'm a practitioner. I knew I didn't need that blood test. Besides, a blood test does not require that big an amount of blood. I thought, isn't this another disguised way to persecute us? Also, when we were first arrested and sent to the forced labour camp, we already had a thorough physical examination and blood work. I told them, "I'm very healthy and I don't need that test." Six policemen pushed me to the ground. They stepped on me. Some twisted my arms. Some stepped on my back, and I couldn't breath because of this. They striped my clothes off of my arm and took my blood by force.
  • Falun Gong Practitioners Tortured in Wangcun Forced Labour Camp

Mr. Cao Yuguo was sentenced to four and a half years in jail for practising Falun Gong. After being released, he worked as a taxi driver. Eventually he was reported for distributing leaflets exposing the persecution and telling people the facts about Falun Gong. In 2006 he was sentenced to two years in a forced labour camp. Mr. Cao upheld his belief and refused to be "transformed." He was not swayed by sleep deprivation inflicted by the deputy group leader, Wang Xinjiang. In fact, he tried to explain the truth about Falun Gong to Wang. Wang was infuriated and punched Mr. Cao in the face about five or six times.
  • Shameful Practice at Shijiazhuang City Forced Labour Camp in Hebei Province

Recently, two to three practitioners were taken to the Shijiazhuang City Forced Labour Camp each day. There are numerous reports of guards brutally tormenting the detainees. Usually, visitors only need to bring documents provided by their local governments to verify their identities, but the guards here put a thick stack of slanderous flyers defaming the founder of Falun Gong by the entrance. Anyone that goes to visit Falun Gong practitioners is forced to read it out loud. If their voice is low, they have to repeat this several times until the guards are satisfied. After reading it, they have to sign their names on it before they are allowed in.
  • The Persecution of Mr. Guo Shunqiang in Beijing Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Guo Shunqiang from Haidian District, Beijing was arrested at home by police on April 20th, 2006. He was then sent to Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp. In order to "transform" him, the labour camp police lock Mr. Guo Shunqiang in a single cell where he is allowed to sleep only 3 to 4 hours every night. The inmates, incited by the guards, verbally abuse him and beat him every day. They force him to sit on a small stool specially designed for a child, which is only six inches tall. They tie his legs and feet together, resulting in his upper and lower legs being forced to bend to less than 90 degrees. His hands are forced to be held on his knees and his back is forced to remain straight. He is then forced to stay in this motionless posture for long periods of time and is forbidden to move any part of his body. If he moves, the inmates will beat him and verbally abuse him.
  • Tortures Currently Taking Place at the No. 5 Division of Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province

Officials at Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp pretend to promote a so-called "division in harmony," while actually escalating the persecution against practitioners. Wang Kai (male), the division head, has ordered arbitrary body searches. He has also instigated other inmates to give practitioners a hard time and ordered labour camp guards to torture practitioners with electric-shock batons. On June 24th, 2007, Wang Kai, head of the No. 5 Division, tortured practitioner Mr. Liu Jingzhou with an electric baton, locked practitioner Mr. Gong Wenyi in a "small cell" and tied him to an "iron chair", and tortured practitioner Mr. Lang Xianguo with an electric baton while he was chained to an iron chair.
  • Xinkaipu Forced Labour Camp: Conditions the International Community Cannot Imagine

Practitioners being held in Xinkaipu Forced Labour Camp make various commercial products. The camp workshops are full of dust and rubbish. The conditions are unsanitary and not suitable for any kind of production. However, food wrappers are made here, including those used for ready-to-eat food. Some criminal (non-practitioner) inmates even intentionally put mucus and faeces on the wrappers to vent their grievances. Guard Wu Bin admitted that this kind of illegal profit-making couldn't happen in Western countries, and is unimaginable to the international community. The cruelty that goes on inside is also not found in any other civilised society. The camp doctors act like they are treating animals, and the guards are killing machines.
  • The Persecution of Practitioner Li Ruixia at Harbin Women's Forced Labour Camp for Drug Addicts

The labour camp forced practitioners to work extremely long hours. The worst case was when they were ordered to work in the basement mending flax cloth. They worked 14-15 hours a day for a month. Some practitioners were so tired that their eyes would not stop watering. The ventilation in the basement was very bad. In the hottest summer days, the practitioners felt suffocated and had difficulty breathing, and they asked the guard to let them take a break. The guard asked the supervisor but was refused. A while later, the guard himself felt dizzy, nauseous, and short of breath, and complained that he could not hold on anymore. Only then did the supervisor let them take a break. Aside from mending flax cloth, the practitioners also sorted leaves, chopsticks, toothpicks, and had to make handicrafts. Sometimes they had to work through the night.
  • Elderly Dafa Practitioner Fan Juncao's Excruciating Persecution in Gansu Forced Labour Camp

Ms. Fan Juncao, 65, persistently practises Falun Gong, follows the principles of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance," and exposes the persecution, and therefore she has been sentenced to forced labour twice in 2000 and 2005 by Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials. In June 2006, Ms. Fan Juncao was sent to a small cell because she did the Falun Gong exercises while in the labour camp. Guards handcuffed her to a steel bed frame in such a way that she was suspended with the tips of her toes touching the ground. After five days of this torture, her wrists were bleeding and she was in a daze. An inmate found her like this and called the head guard Wang. They let her down just long enough for her to regain consciousness and then hung her up again.
  • Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp Officials Accuse Practitioners of Being "Unpatriotic" and Use It as Excuse for Torture

In 2001, China successfully landed the right to host the 2008 Olympic Games. Chinese officials promised better human rights as a condition for the bid, and then turned around to use it as a tool for justifying its persecution and suppression. I was imprisoned in Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp. Guard Yue Qingjin shouted at me, "You are against the bid for the Olympics. You don't love your country and resist transformation. Even if we kill you, we'll claim that you committed suicide." Several guards put me on a cotton quilt and tied my four limbs down with strips of fabric. They yanked the strips in four different directions, which caused terrible pain. They shocked me with electric batons, shouted at me and ordered me to give up my belief. When they saw that I was about to faint, they stopped and force-fed me with some water.
  • Additional Information on the Persecution of Yu Ming at Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp in Beijing

Mr. Yu Ming, a Falun Gong practitioner, is currently detained at Masanjia Labour Camp in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. In order to force him to give up his belief in Falun Gong, he was tortured at Tuanhe Forced Labour Camp in Beijing in 2006, including being tied to a chair for three months, resulting in muscular atrophy all over his body and other severe physical damage. The guards in Beijing were unable to shake Yu's strong belief. They transferred Yu to Masanjia Labour Camp in Liaoning Province on May 21st, 2007. Because Yu's health was so severely damaged at Tuanhe Labour Camp he was transferred to the Masanjia Labour Camp Hospital after just a few days. He remains there today.
  • Recent Cases of Persecution in Handan Forced Labour Camp, Hebei Province

On October 24th, 2007, Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Gu Daping went to the wash room without reporting to the labour camp guards. Wang Zhiming (male), the political instructor of the Specially Controlled Division, viciously struck Mr. Gu with a rubber club several dozen times. On October 15th, 2007, Mr. Li Qiusheng and Mr. Xu Kai were ordered to remain standing for a long period of time. Two weeks or so later, they were ordered to stand from 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and subjected to sleep deprivation. Mr. Li's legs are badly swollen as a result. Zuo Tao, a labour camp division head, has viciously beaten numerous practitioners on the grounds that they did not write statements renouncing Falun Gong.
