Inside the Labour Camps

  • Ms. Qi Jinling Persecuted at Wanjia and Qianjin Forced Labour Camps

Despite the pressure of the persecution, Ms. Qi Jinling, 43 firmly practises Falun Gong and follows the principle of Truth-Compassion-Forbearance. She was captured by the police in August 2006 and sent to a forced labour camp and suffered brutal persecution for over two years. In November 2006, guards ordered Ms. Qi to come to the office. They beat her on the head and back, swearing at her all the while. Then the guards tied her hands behind her back and ordered her to squat with her legs pressed together. Ms. Qi refused to comply. Guards beat her again and pushed her to the floor. After midnight, Sha Yujin grabbed her by the hair and dragged her around on the floor, twisting her around. Ms. Qi's hair was left all over the floor.
  • Rujiang Men's Forced Labour Camp Uses Convicted Drug Abusers As Personal Monitors To Harass Practitioners

In the camp, during the day, guards force the practitioner to read material which defames Falun Gong, or to recite the camp's regulations, etc. In evening, the guards force the practitioner to talk to them, or to write words that attack Falun Gong. If the practitioner refuses, the guards deprive him of sleep until 3 a.m. or 4 a.m even though the practitioner is required to get up at 6 a.m. If the practitioner does not give up his beliefs, the guards punish him by forcing him to stand facing a wall, depriving him of sleep, etc. If the practitioner does not give up even after 1 to 2 months of such torture, the guards deprive him of further rights and continue to have the personal monitors monitor him 24 hours a day. The practitioner is not allowed to speak with other practitioners, or shop downstairs, or visit other cells, or leave his cell.
  • New Chief of Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp Applied Pressure to Intensify the Persecution

Changlinzi Forced Labour Camp in Harbin City is one of the principal camps where the Chinese Communist Party persecutes Falun Gong practitioners. For a long time practitioners have been subjected to inhumane tortures in this camp. Particularly when the new warden, Zheng Yunfeng, arrived, he used "restructuring" as an excuse to apply pressure to all the guards to make them intensify the persecution of practitioners. When the new warden arrived, the forced labour hours were extended, and inmates must now work from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Those that refuse to work or are unable to finish their quotas are labelled "not-reformed" and their jail terms are extended. Practitioners are prohibited from talking arbitrarily or moving about, and they are only allowed to use the toilet at designated times.
  • Recounting the Persecution at No. 2 Women's Forced Labour Camp in Shandong Province

The guards at Shandong Province No. 2 Women's Forced Labour Camp used different methods to persecute practitioners. Some were physically punished by being forced to stand facing a wall from day to night. They were not allowed to move or sleep in order to overtire their minds and bodies. Some guards took advantage of practitioners' kindness to lie to them. Because the practitioners were frightened, they mistook the guards' words and persecutory acts as beneficial to them. Some guards used family, social relations, the threat of divorce or getting fired from a job, and other means to pressure practitioners to make the wrong decision. The guards also used people who had been "transformed" to deceive practitioners with deviated logic.
  • Cruel Torture in Wangcun Forced Labour Camp: Brainwashing with "Stew the Eagle" and Electric Shocking in Water Dungeon

Mr. Zou Songtao was tortured to death in Wangcun Labour Camp through shocking him with a dozen high voltage electric batons. In the beginning of 2001, guards in Shandong Province labour camps deprived practitioners their right to sleep unless they accepted the brainwashing. They call the method "Stew the Eagles". Under such cruel brainwashing, some practitioners could not bear the sleepiness, turned away from Falun Gong, became collaborators, and in turn, started brainwashing other firm practitioners. Guards also locked practitioners in a water dungeon around the clock and ran a low electricity current in the water to shock them.
  • Practitioners Resolutely Resist the Persecution in Wangcun Forced Labour Camp

The guards at Wangcun Forced Labour Camp committed huge crimes against practitioners, and the methods they used were extremely cruel. They carried out atrocities of unparalleled savagery. Ms. Zhu Huizhen and Yang Shuping were blinded as a result of inhuman torture. When Ms. Zhu's son went to visit his mother and found she was blind he choked up with tears. The guards claimed that Ms. Zhu was pretending to be blind, but a hospital examination confirmed that she was blind. Ms. Zhang Min, Ms. Wang Xumei were locked up in a small room, where they were subjected to inhuman torture beyond the imagination of people.
  • Accounts of Forced-feeding at Jiutai Forced Labour Camp and Jilin City Detention Centre

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Li Wenjun held a hunger strike to protest his persection and was tied to an iron chair commonly known as a tiger bench. Mr. Li was then fed through a rigid naso-gastric tube with a concoction of corn flour gruel mixed with salt and unknown drugs. He was force-fed once or twice per day, depending on the decisions made by the Section Chief, Yu, the prison doctor, or the prison manager, Lei. Mr. Li Wenjun experienced great pain and once told his mother, "My body is in a overwhelming amount of pain!"
  • Shandong Province Women's Forced Labour Camp Brutally Persecutes Falun Gong Practitioners

If a practitioner refuses to give up his belief in Falun Gong, he is not allowed to use the toilet, brush his teeth, wash, sleep, or even talk. Ms. Li Xiumei is currently imprisoned at this Shandong forced labour camp. One day the guards shackled Ms. Li's arms to a prison cell window for seven days and nights, with her feet barely touching the ground. Suddenly the shackles became loose and sprung open. Ms. Li immediately collapsed on the floor from pain, hunger, and exhaustion. When the guards saw her lying there, they rushed over and started beating her. Fearing that their actions would be leaked to the outside during the Olympic Games, they secretly transferred her to another forced labour camp on September 20th, 2008.
  • Young Mother Detained at the Sanshui Forced Labour Camp, Now Reduced to Skin and Bones

The 610 Office in Lechang City ransacked 30-year-old practitioner Ms. Gong Xuejun's house and forcibly took her to Lechang Detention Centre on August 19th, 2008. Later, Ms. Gong Xuejun was taken to the Sanshui Women's Forced Labour Camp. When her relatives visited Ms. Gong in the camp they could hardly recognize her. Because Gong Xuejun had been tortured, her weight had dropped from 49kg to 30kg (approximately 108 lbs to 66 lbs) within one month. She was nothing but skin and bones. Her eyes were sunken and her hair had been cut short and was in disarray. Upon seeing her shocking condition, Ms. Gong's relatives were in tears.
  • Weining Forced Labour Camp in Benxi City, Liaoning Province Uses the "Stretching Bed" to Torture Falun Gong Practitioners

Weining Forced Labour Camp uses "stretching beds" to force practitioners into giving up their beliefs. First, the guards take off the practitioner's clothes, and then they tie their limbs onto a specially-designed double bed using strips of cloth, with the legs split to the extreme, and both arms stretched out on either side. In this way, the whole body is immobilized, with only the head and neck being able to move a little. The practitioners are also not allowed to get up to relieve themselves. All urination and defecation occur on the bed. The practitioners are bound onto this bed around the clock for more than a month at a time, causing severe damage to their tendons and muscles. The unbearable pain sometimes brings about mental collapse.
  • Practitioners Suffer Continual Abuse and Torture at the Heizuizi Women's Forced Labour Camp in Changchun City, Jilin Province

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Wang Pingrui, 21, was arrested along with her mother in May 2008. She was sentenced to two years of forced labour at Heizuizi Women's Forced Labour Camp, where she was tortured beyond her physical and emotional endurance. Because Ms. Wang did the Falun Gong meditation guards hung her up on a bunk bed with her feet not touching the floor and was then beaten. She was beaten frequently. She periodically suffered blackouts due to this torture.
  • Ms. Liu Zhenxia Tortured at Labour Camp in Zibo City, Shandong Province

Ms. Liu Zhenxia, a Falun Gong practitioner, was held at the Shandong Province No. 2 Women's Forced Labour Camp. She was not allowed to sleep and was forced to stand for long periods of time consecutively. Because she refused to cooperate with the guards, Ms. Liu Zhenxia was forced to stay in the toilet. She was not allowed to have warm clothes, even during the cold winter. Guards ordered prisoners to pour cold water on the floor and forced her to sit on the wet floor wearing only light weight clothing. They swore at her and beat her until her face was swollen. She suffered inhumane torture constantly and became emaciated as a result of the abuse. Standing constantly for 24 hours without sleeping, being hung up on iron window frames and being tied to a bed using a special straight jacket are all very common ways to torture Falun Gong practitioners.
  • On the Eve of the Olympics, an Unbreakable Will

In an image that so rarely escapes from China, Zhang Lianying is telling her story of horror. In Beijing Women's Forced Labour Camp Zhang was slapped, kicked, beaten, strangled, abused, deprived of sleep, had her private parts attacked. She was beaten or strangled into a coma 14 times. She says all parts of her body were violated and injured. Because she refused to renounce Falun Gong she recounted: “They tied up my hands and feet, lifted my feet and tied them to a chair, and used a rope from strips of bed-sheets to tie my neck to the back of the chair—so tight that I could not move."
  • Viciousness at Hebei Province Women's Forced Labour Camp During the Olympic Games

There were relatively fewer beatings in Hebei Province Women's Forced Labour Camp prior to the Olympic Games. But as soon as the Olympics started on August 9th, 2008, the situation began intensifying and practitioners were severely persecuted, the worst point being around August 20th. Practitioners were physically abused, beaten, cursed at, and humiliated--all of which are prohibited according to policy. In order to force determined practitioners to wear the uniforms, they ripped the clothes from female practitioners, cut apart their underwear with scissors, and chained them to a wooden board bed. These practitioners were then beaten, electrically-shocked, tied up, and tortured by other means.
  • Over Seventy Falun Gong Practitioners Detained in Brainwashing Centre at the Zhangjiakou City Forced Labour Camp During the Beijing Olympic Games

During the Beijing Olympic Games, officials from the National Security Ministry and the Hebei Provincial 610 Office came to Zhangjiakou City in person to check on how the persecution of Falun Gong was going. Brainwashing centres were set up in Zhangjiakou City Forced Labour Camp. They arrested more than seventy Falun Gong practitioners from eleven districts and counties throughout the city. They sent the practitioners to the brainwashing centres and persecuted them for over two months. Those that resisted the brainwashing were beaten.
