One day before Christmas, the policeman on duty in front of the Embassy came to talk with me for more than an hour. He said, "I’ve seen the material on the posters and I support you." He signed the petition and said, "What a wonderful thing to calm down and think of others. This Christmas, I will also arrange some time to sit down and think of others."

"The strength of Hong Kong lies in the fact that the ‘one country, two systems’ principle has been able to be maintained. I fear, and many with me, that this change will undermine that principle severely. This would, of course, be completely unacceptable. The fact that Mainland China is exerting pressure to make this change happen is not comforting...If a group such as Falun Gong, which is forbidden in China, were also to be forbidden in Hong Kong, it would be a serious violation of the principle: one country, two systems."

On November 4th, the Ministry of State Security in Beijing secretly arrested my fiancée. So far we have no idea of her whereabouts and I am very concerned for her safety. I am aware that the police in China will do anything under Jiang’s orders. Today when I am being awarded my doctorate, I call on all people around the world to urge China to promptly stop the persecution of Falun Gong and to unconditionally release all Falun Gong practitioners, including my fiancée.

'What Falun Gong practitioners believe in is Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance. Even though they are physically persecuted, they still show mercy to encourage people to be good without complaint or hatred. If you can really be sorry for your wrongdoings and make a fresh start from the bottom of your heart by developing good thoughts, a bright future will await you.'

During her detention, Gong went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was kicked, punched and force-fed with food and medicine. The guards usually did not do it themselves. They ordered the criminals to pinch her tendons and force-feed her while plugging her nose. They were also responsible for the multiple bruises on her arms and legs. She was unable to walk and two of her teeth had been knocked out.

Dafa practitioners are illegally imprisoned without trial and are sentenced to long prison terms for believing in Truth, Compassion, Tolerance. They are tortured and beaten with no way to appeal and very little chance of revealing their situation to the outside world. Therefore, many practitioners in China have had to resort to hunger strikes to protest against the unlawful and inhumane persecution that they are subjected to.

The police were afraid that the neighbours would come and stop their evil actions, so they stuffed the practitioners' mouths to gag them and threatened that if they made any noise, the police would carry them away in sacks. Thus Lin Xueyou and Hu Hongyu were forcibly arrested and are presently detained in the Xinjin Detention Centre.

The activities outside the European Parliament demonstrated the successful efforts of Falun Gong practitioners from all over Europe to deny the persecution of Falun Gong. The meaning of the activities outside the European Parliament served not only to voice practitioners’ opposition to Article 23 legislation but also to lay a deeper foundation for revealing the truth of the persecution all over Europe.

"Hong Kong has enjoyed prosperity for several decades without this law; why does Beijing so urgently push the Hong Kong government to enact the so-called anti-subversion law after only 5 years of Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule?"

'My family has already been bitterly persecuted by the despotic power of the Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin. Now he is attempting to extend his terror tactics to the six million innocent people in Hong Kong. He wants to make the Hong Kong people, who originally had a life of freedom, live under his terrible shadow by enforcing Article 23.'

'HRIC notes with great concern the chilling effect discussion of the proposed legislation has already had on Hong Kong, and urges the SAR government to address the legitimate concerns expressed by many groups regarding the proposals.'

'On December 19th, Falun Gong followers held a press conference in front of the European Parliament. Mr. Roger Helmer, MEP, spoke at the news conference and voiced his support for Falun Gong.'

"Aimed at suppressing dissent, Article 23 is inimical to freedom and human rights. It also contains procedural flaws and is nothing less than another extension of the Chinese Communist Party's authoritarian regime."

Through his fiancée's experience, Li said that he wanted to let the Australian people recognise more clearly the plight of millions of Falun Gong practitioners in China, and motivate them to care about and help stop this persecution of millions of innocent people.

Mr. King expressed the view that the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese government is wrong, and the Australian government is seeking effective ways to rescue Li's fiancée. As for the Christmas present, their office would contact relevant departments in Shanghai where the labour camp is located and make an enquiry on his behalf, to show their concern over the case.
