'This government, together with our EU partners, takes very seriously the human rights concerns of Falun Gong members. Both the Taoiseach [Irish equivalent to the Prime Minister] and Minister Cowen have raised the issue on a number of occasions with the Chinese authorities...The rights of Falun Gong members have also been raised through European Union channels..Ireland has also pursued this issue through the United Nations.'

One visitor to our booth said, "It’s really amazing that Falun Gong practitioners can face this persecution peacefully and rationally after suffering so much...I believe that people all over the world will be concerned about Falun Gong in the future and more people will learn Falun Gong.”

During November 2001, 36 western Falun Gong practitioners travelled to Beijing to appeal to the Chinese government to end the persecution of Falun Gong. They also wanted to appeal to the Chinese people for justice. They were arrested, beaten and detained.

Wang was also beaten brutally by the police and prisoners for shouting, "Dafa is good!" The vicious guards tied her to a tree, struck her jaw violently and repeatedly, causing her to bleed from the mouth. They also strapped a muzzle on her mouth in order to prevent her from shouting out.

Australia has expressed its views to China many times, and at the highest levels. Australia has raised China's treatment of Falun Gong in various round of the bilateral Human-Rights Dialogue, most recently in August 2002. Regrettably, China's response at those talks did not suggest any softening of its position was likely. But the Government will continue to pursue the issue.
