Dear Sir / Madam

On the 18th of December the European Parliament came together to discuss the proposed Article 23, which Hong Kong is attempting to introduce. They will vote to pass the urgent resolution concerning this article and its details.

I would like to express my pleasure at hearing this. I would also like to express my concerns about the proposed legislation; if passed, this legislation would make it straightforward to ban Christians or other religious groups that do not conform to Mainland China’s ideals and would place Hong Kong under direct Chinese rule! This type of law already exists in Mainland China and has had a devastating effect on the country and its people, with thousands, if not millions of people suffering in labour camps and jails.

The guise of secession and subversion, combined with increased police power, would turn Hong Kong into a police state. Not only this, but questions would arise over the safety of the media, business and other sectors of society. Freedom of information would be curtailed to what the Mainland Chinese government demands!

This would severely damage Hong Kong’s future freedom and autonomy.

It’s time we spoke up for Christians and other religious groups in Mainland China and not passively wait to see if things change.

We definitely should not just watch and appease China as they spread their methods of suppression to free countries.

Yours faithfully
[An Irish citizen]
