Zhou Xuefei, 28, is from Gansu province in China. She graduated from Gansu Teachers University in 1995, but is now illegally detained in Guangzhou Sanshui City Women Labour Camp.

From meeting each other, to loving each other, to getting married; this is an true life love story.

A Miracle Encounter

In 1991, after graduating from university, I was assigned a position at Shenzhen Revenue Bureau. In Sep. 1995, I got a World Bank scholarship and went to study for an MSc in Finance in Georgia States University, Atlanta City.

At beginning of 1996, I discovered that I had hepatitis B. As a result, I felt like I could not eat anything, and felt weak all over. This state of the illness became more and more serious. Eventually, I had to leave school so that I could see doctors.

One day in July, I found a leaflet about a free Falun Gong exercise class located near the Chinatown. I went to learn the exercises, and to my surprise within one month, I found I could eat properly again. Also, the pain in my liver disappeared, as well as all of the other symptoms. I was a miracle!

In Aug. 1996, I went back to China and continued to work for the Shenzhen Revenue Bureau. Most of my colleagues knew that I had suffered from hepatitis B, but they didn’t believe that I had recovered due to practising Falun Gong. They persuaded me to go to a hospital for a blood test so that it could be seen whether or not I had indeed recovered. The results showed that more than 30 of my indexes were in the normal range, and there were two higher than normal. These two were the ones which the doctor said that the higher the better. My colleagues were astonished, they could not believe that Falun Gong was so powerful.

Two Heart’s Meet

One Saturday morning in March 1999, I went to our practise site as usual. When I arrived, I saw a girl with a blue sweater learning the movements. I thought that she must be new at the practise. I walked up to correct her movements and she smiled to me. She was so gentle and quiet. After I went back home that day, I found her smile always came to mind.

I had never been in love with anyone, so I couldn’t make sure if this was love or not. Anyway, whenever I thought of her, I felt she was a kind, considerate girl.

Afterward, we often met at our practise site and we got to know each other gradually. I talked about my family, job, and life with her, she talked less but always listened quiet, I was deeply touched by how genuine and kind she was.

Common Happiness

At the time, she was only 22 and had just graduated from the Chinese department of the Gansu Teachers University and was working for an advertisement company in Shenzhen. When we were off from the work and at weekends, we usually went to Lianhuashan Park together.

In order to help poorly children who are unable to go to schools, we had donated more than 3,000 yuan to the “Hope Project” to sponsor 7 Guangdong Lianping primary school pupils. We also wrote letter to them, so on weekends, we often read the children’s letter together to share in their happiness and tears.

I liked the letters that she wrote to those children very much. In those letters, she often encouraged the children to treasure the opportunity of study, and to do well. She also told them about Chinese traditional culture, moral values, and explained the principle of “putting others before oneself” in a simple way to them.

Winds and Cloud Changed Suddenly

In July 1999, a sudden storm had broken our peaceful and happy life. We found that we were separated from the world – surrounded by propaganda from newspapers, TV stations and radio, as well as suspicions from our bosses and neighbours.

I was reported to the Guangdong Security Bureau, because I practised Falun Gong. Afterwards, the leaders of my work place often talked to me, trying to make me renounce Falun Gong. I always told them about my experience of practising Falun Gong patiently, because I believed the reason that the government made a wrong decision was that it knew nothing about Falun Gong.

They had nothing to say as they knew me very well and knew some my experiences, but due to the great pressure from above, they had to terminate my job.

On 7th June 2000, I went to Beijing’s National Appeal Office with the letter which told of my experience of practising Falun Gong. However, I was arrested immediately when I made it clear why I had come. I was kept in a basement without ventilation in the Beijing Liaison Office of the Guangdong Government. On 12th June, I was sent back to Shenzhen and detained in Nanshan. I was forced to labour in prison for nearly two months.

My mother was shocked by my situation, and my 70 years old father had fallen, because of worry, on his way back from coming to see me. When I saw him in custody, he was leaning upon his stick, and told me that Xuefei was looking for me and asking about me.

True Love

When I was released, I went back home and saw Xuefei who had become thinner, but her eyes were full of love and concern..I touched her thin face and whispered:” let’s get married.” She nodded her head. After marrying, we rented a room that was only 15 square meters near the city centre, and we began our married life together.

So many nights together, we read , recalled the memories of cultivation practise, and encouraged each other. We knew there was nothing wrong with “Truth, Compassion and Tolerance”, and we believed that time would prove us correct.

She still wrote letters to those children, and encouraged them as usual..

Every morning, she wiped and cleaned my leather shoes carefully..

Whenever holidays and weekends, she still remembered to greet our parents by phone..

The Windstorm Continues Through the Night

In Nov. 2000, I went to see one of my friends. After I came back and opened the door, I couldn’t find her, my heart was worried.

I rushed out, and searched everywhere for her. Finally, I found out that she was being detained in Shenzhen Futian District Custodial centre. She was detained because she was distributing leaflets on the street. They didn’t allow me to see Xuefei, so I had to send her money and clothes through a third party.

In Jan. 2001, I was informed that she was sentenced to two years of labour “re-education”, at the Sanshui Women Labour Camp.

The Proud and Brave Plum Blossom without Fear of Snow

In Feb. 2001, to avoid arrest again, I came back to Atlanta City. Although I am in a peaceful and free environment, I always miss Xuefei and my other friends who have been homeless or detained for adhering to their belief in “Truth, Compassion and Tolerance”.

In two years, Xuefei has experienced brutal torture, and forced labour. She was watched closely by criminals 24 hours a day, tied up under the burning sun in the summer, and stripped of her cloths and forced to sit on frozen concrete in the winter. They even didn’t give her food, and she nearly lost her eyesight due to the brutal torture.

One time I called mother and found out that Xuefei persisted in writing letters to those children from prison. She also sent them 50 yuan by post during the New Year holiday.

My heart was crying, it’s true that the principles of “Truth, Compassion and Tolerance” are “the most perfect and beautiful”. These principles cannot be broken down or suppressed by any tyrant.

I recall my wife’s favourite song; “One Branch of Plum Blossom”:

The truth feelings are as wide as grassland,
Which could not be obstructed by wind and rain.
When cloud opened and the sun reappeared,
The lofty sunshine is shining you and me.
The true feelings are like the plum blossom,
Which could not be covered by ice and snow.
When it blossomed on the coldest branches,
Spring is coming to you and me.

Yes, “if winter comes, can spring be far behind”?
