Shang Baolin is the husband of Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Zengyan from Pingdu City, Shandong Province. After July 20, 1999, because his wife firmly practised Dafa, the police officers from Pingdu Public Security Bureau and the Chengguan Police Station continuously went to ransack Shang's home and threatened his family members. They had illegally taken Zhang Zengyan away a few times and fined her 26,200 Yuan. Due to the harassment, arrests, ransacking and fines, his wife could not go home. The family was in poverty, and no one was there to take care of their little girl. He was under great mental duress. During the last two years, he often suffered from headaches, dizziness, and fainting spells.

On the eve of Chinese National Day, police again snuck into Shang Baolin's home and tried to arrest his wife Zhang Zengyan. At the time, Zhang Zengyan was at her mother's home. The police couldn't find her and threatened Shang Baolin to tell them where his wife was, otherwise they said they would take him to the police station. Under the intense pressure, Shang Baolin ended up telling them where his wife was.

After the police left, Shang Baolin immediately called his wife and told her about the incident. At that time, his voice was shaking and he could only speak broken sentences with no strength -- that was how scared and shocked he was. Due to the mental shock, extreme pressure and worrying about the safety of his wife, Shang Baolin fell sick and never recovered.

On October 7, 2002, Shang Baolin's condition worsened. He passed out on the floor and did not regain consciousness. He was sent to the People's Hospital, where they tried for several days to save him but failed. On October 10, he passed away. He was only 39 years old.
