Anaesthetist Chen Meili, 67, from Nanchang City Tortured to Death

Ms. Chen Meili was an anaesthetist in the Department of Anaesthesia at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi Nanchang University Medical College. In 2004, she was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison by Nanchang City Xihu District Court, because she was a Falun Gong practitioner.

Prior to her arrest, she had been very healthy. She was tortured while in prison, and her health deteriorated. She developed severe hypertension and eventually lost sight in both eyes.

In June 2009, after suffering in prison for five years, Chen Meili was finally released. She was traumatised both mentally and physically due to the torture.

Within two years of being released, she developed symptoms of heart failure and kidney failure. She was unable to care for herself and had difficulty using the stairs. Her complexion became pale, and she also required regular blood dialysis.

Chen Meili passed away on March 6th, 2011 at the age of sixty-seven.
