Chen Xin, a Falun Gong practitioner from Dalian, was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2002. He has been held in Jinzhou Prison for ten years. Recently Cui Yuanqi, section leader of the First Ward, and team leader Liu Hongwei tried to force Mr. Chen to be “transformed” (to give up his belief). They held him in solitary confinement. Mr. Chen has been on a hunger strike for over a month to protest the persecution.

In the last three years, Jinzhou Prison has been denying Mr. Chen’s family the right to visit him. His family complained to a higher level of government, the Liaoning Provincial Prison Management Bureau, which denied them visitation as well. The prison unreasonably required that his family have a letter from their local police station stating that Chen Xin would not practise Falun Gong if they wanted to see him.

Recently Chen Xin’s mother, who is in her seventies, travelled to Jinzhou from Dalian again. She stayed at a hotel and went to the prison twice a day. However, Cui Yuanqi and Liu Hongwei refused to meet with her. In the end she had to go back home without seeing her son.

Jinzhou Prison violates Prison Law when they don’t allow families to visit inmates. But above all, Chen Xin didn’t break any laws. He was put into prison because of his belief in Falun Gong.

Chen Xin’s family is worried about his safety. Jinzhou Prison is infamous for its torture. Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Litian was tortured to death in Jinzhou Prison on November 17th, 2008.
