Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhou Guilan from Suihua, Heilongjiang Province was arrested by officers from the Beilin District 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) on September 15th, 2011. After being sentenced to three and a half years in prison, she filed an appeal and sued the Suihua 610 Office over this injustice. Her family hired an attorney to defend her, but before a second trial date was set, she died in a detention centre on March 29th, 2012.

Sixty-four-year-old Ms. Zhou Guilan was diagnosed with late-term lung cancer in 2009. Later on in 2009, she was fortunate to meet a Falun Gong practitioner who encouraged her to take up the practice. Through studying the Falun Gong teachings and practising the exercises diligently, the cancer disappeared within two months. People around her knew she had fully recovered by practising Falun Gong. From that time on, she validated Falun Gong with her personal experience and spread the facts about the practice everywhere she went.

Li Jianfei from the Beilin District 610 Office in Suihua arrested Ms. Zhou while she was talking to people about Falun Gong on the afternoon of February 12th, 2011. She was detained for 12 days.

On September 15th, Ms. Zhou distributed DVDs to passersby and talked to them about Falun Gong. She was arrested again by Wang Shubo (female) and Li Jianfei from the Beilin District 610 Office and detained in the Suihua Detention Centre.

After being sentenced to three and a half years in prison, she filed an appeal with the Beilin District Court in Suihua City, suing the 610 Office for the persecution she suffered. Her family hired an attorney to present a not guilty plea for her. The case was transferred to the Suihua Intermediate Court, but the date for the second trial had not been set.

At 6:10 a.m. on March 22nd, 2012, Ms. Zhou showed symptoms of a cerebral hemorrhage and fell into a coma in the Suihua Detention Centre. She was taken to the Suihua People's Hospital (the former Suihua Health School) for emergency treatment. Her family quickly applied for her release to seek medical treatment. She had a tracheotomy on the afternoon of March 28th and passed away at 1 a.m. on March 29th.
