In Beijiang Prison of Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, prison officials have deprived practitioners of sleep in order to force them to renounce Falun Gong. Below is Mr. Lu Qiqi's sleeping record from August to October 2011:

31/8-1/9: 0 hours
2/9: 5 hours
3/9-9/8: 0 hours
9/9-12/9: 3 hours
13/9-18/9: 1 hour
19/9-28/9: 3 hours
29/9: 6 hours
30/9: 3 hours
1/10-10/5: 0 hours
6/10: 3 hours
7/10-10/9: 0 hours
10/10: 3 hours

Mr. Lu's sleeping record shows the cruelty of the persecution in prison. From September 13th-28th, 2011, Mr. Lu was allowed to sleep a total of only four hours. He became very weak and his mind became unclear. Much of his hair turned white.

Mr. Lu Qiqi, born in March 1963, was a well-respected architectural engineer. On January 12th, 2008, he was arrested in Bao'an District, Shenzhen City, and then detained in the Bao'an Detention Centre. He was later sentenced to four years in prison.

Mr. Lu was sent to Jiangbei Prison on April 23rd, 2009. Two inmates were ordered to monitor him. He was not allowed to read, talk or sit on the bed. Guards tried to find out each practitioner's “weakness,” and used it to try to force practitioners to renounce Falun Gong. They used those who had given up practicing Falun Gong to deceive practitioners. Practitioners were also forced to watch videos that defamed Falun Gong.

Mr. Lu was forced to go through high-pressure brainwashing sessions for more than a year, including months of intensive “study.” Starting in January 2011, he was physically tortured. He was deprived of sleep and forced to sit on a small stool for long periods of time. He was told that he would not be released until he renounced Falun Gong.

From August to October 2011, he was repeatedly subjected to sleep deprivation. He was once deprived of sleep for five continuous days and nights. On another occasion he was allowed only four hours of sleep over a two week period. As a result, his mind became unclear. Prison officials then forced him to renounce Falun Gong when he was extremely tired. Mr. Lu did what he was asked with an unclear mind. He changed his stance however, when he was thinking more clearly later.

On August 10th, 2011, when officials from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Justice came to inspect the prison, Mr. Lu informed them about the crimes that prison division chief Huo (given name unknown) and other guards committed, including physical torture of the detainees. Huo later retaliated and used different attempts to force him Mr. Lu to renounce Falun Gong, including torture. Mr. Lu was subjected to long-term sleep deprivation and forced to sit on a small stool for long periods. They also hit his legs with heavy objects, pinched him, irritated his eyes with some kind of drug, poked his nostrils and ears, and stomped repeatedly on his toes. His shins still showed marks of his injuries four months later.

Mr. Lu was released on January 11th, 2012.
