Prior to practising Falun Gong, Ms. Zhao Xue suffered from cancer and had many other illnesses. However, these problems soon disappeared after she started practising. Despite being subjected to long-term persecution by the Chinese Communist Party, she has kept telling people the facts about Falun Gong, and was subsequently arrested more than ten times.

The deputy head of Dalian City Domestic Security Division, Jiao Jian and officers from Houjiagou Police Station in Liujiaqiao arrested Ms. Zhao on November 15th, 2010, because they believed that she was responsible for broadcasting Falun Gong programmes exposing the persecution in Dalian after tapping into the local broadcasting system. She was severely abused and tortured, and was hospitalised in Dalian Central Hospital for more than ten days.

Ms. Zhao was later taken to Yaojia Detention Centre. After being detained there for five months, she was sentenced to five years in Liaoning Province Women's Prison. As a result of the abuse that she suffered, in early May 2011, Ms. Zhao's had very high blood pressure, and couldn't control her bowel movements. She became emaciated and was bound to a wheelchair, unable to take care of herself. Her family demanded her release, but the prison officials said that she could only be released if she renounced her belief.

Ms. Zhao's second brother and cousin went to the prison in early December 2011 to visit her. However, only her brother was allowed to see her. It was difficult to recognise her because of her condition. Her weight had dropped considerably and her teeth were missing. It was learned that she had been taken to the hospital for emergency treatment a few days before, and had to undergo emergency treatment several times.
