Ms. Yi Xianmei Suffers Mental Breakdown After Being Persecuted at Brainwashing Centre

Officers from Hongjiang City 610 Office (an organisation of special agents just for persecuting Falun Gong) have arrested several Falun Gong practitioners since September 7th and taken them to Huaihua City Brainwashing Centre, located in the Hutian Development Zone in Huaihua, Hunan Province. Those arrested include: Ms. Yi Xianmei, a teacher at Tangwan Town Middle School; Ms. Jiang Yongmei from Anjiang Town, Ms. Ding Hong'ai from Wanxi Town and another female teacher from Tiepo Town.

Ms. Yi has been persecuted many times simply for practising Falun Gong. She was taken to Tangwan Police Station in April 2001, and was beaten severely. The police forced her husband to pay 1,000 yuan1 before they would release her. She was arrested again when she attended a small experience sharing conference in July 2001, and was taken to the city detention centre. Officials at the detention centre extorted 4,000 yuan from her husband before releasing her.

In order to avoid being arrested again, Ms. Yi had to flee from her home. The police forced her husband to join a search party looking for her, and made him to pay for all the expenses, including food and lodgings. Ms. Yi's employer also deducted 15,000 yuan from her salary.

Ms. Yi was sentenced to three years of forced labour in 2004. She was not paid her salary during that time, and was also deprived of the opportunity for a promotion. Her monthly salary became much lower than her colleagues in the same position. Ms. Yi's husband had to take out a loan in order to pay for their children's college tuition. The total debt accumulated to 318,000 yuan, over $50,000 USD, in a three-year period.

The local police arrested Ms. Yi on September 7th, with help from the school administration. She was taken to Huaihua Brainwashing Centre with her husband, who was forced to accompany her there. She was subjected to brainwashing and was severely beaten. Ms. Yi suffered a mental breakdown as a result of being persecuted. Officials at the brainwashing centre extorted 1,000 yuan from her husband, and forced him to sign a agreement accepting full responsibility for her condition, before they would release her.
