Falun Gong practitioners Ms. Li Hongxia and Ms. Wang Xiuling from Qitaihe City, Heilongjiang, were arrested in May 2011, while practitioner Ms. Ding Shiying was arrested in March 2011. All three women are currently being held at the Qitaihe City Detention Centre.

Their families have tried to visit them many times, but have always been told, “They are being transformed.” [forcibly renounce Falun Gong] Recently, they heard that Ms. Li's and Ms. Wang's files were transferred to the Taoshan District Court, while Ms. Ding’s file was transferred to the Xinxing District Court.

Ms. Li’s youngest child has suffered persecution since the third grade. Ms. Li's children have been forced to do child labour to survive and accept help from kindhearted people. They are terrified whenever they see an officer or a police vehicle. Their loving mother has now been arrested again.

Ms. Li Tortured in Prison for Four Years

When Ms. Li Hongxia was 34 years old, her husband died in an accident at work. She had to work temporary jobs to support her three young children. She lived in pain every day due to hardship and mental anguish. After she started practising Falun Gong, she became optimistic and always considered others first. Her children also began to feel happy again.

After the persecution of Falun Gong began on July 20th, 1999, Ms. Li’s family, like many families in China, was continuously harassed and threatened. Ms. Li was detained many times. In 2003, she was sent to the Qitaihe Mental Hospital. Yin Zhongliang, director of Qitaihe Detention Centre, wanted to torture Ms. Li by forced-feeding her. When the doctor refused, Yin told the doctor that if Ms. Li died from force-feeding, her body could be thrown to the roadside, and he could report that she ran away. Yin also said to Ms. Li, “I wish I could throw you in a prison full of men so the inmates can rape you.”

Ms. Li was later sentenced to four years in prison because she refused to give up her belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. She was sent to Heilongjiang Women's Prison where she was tortured and forced to do slave labour. Almost every day, she was forced to “sit on a small stool,” where practitioners are forced to sit still on small benches next to each other with their legs together. Those who sat in the back rows are forced to have their legs against the buttocks of the people who sat in front of them. Anyone who moved was beaten. They were allowed to use the toilet for only five minutes. Anyone who took longer was beaten. Other torture methods Ms. Li was subjected to included the “big hang up,” “back cuffing,” and “hanging up with hands cuffed behind the back.”

Arrested Again

Ms. Li Hongxia and Ms. Wang Xiuling were at Taoshan Market at around 2:00 p.m. on May 17th, 2011, when they were arrested by two officers from Taoshan Police Station. At the police station, Ms. Li refused to tell them her name and was brutally beaten by director Wang Xifu. Both women were later sent to Qitaihe Detention Centre.

That same evening, Ms. Li’s family went to the Taoshan Police Station and were threatened by the police. The officers even tried to detain her children, but failed.

The next day on May 18th, Ms. Li's family went to the detention centre again and demanded to see her. They were told, “You may see her after paying 400 yuan1 for the cost of food.” After they paid the money, the guard let them in. Before they walked very far, another guard came out and said, “People from the provincial agency are here to inspect. We can't let them see her.” Then the family heard shouting coming from inside the building. Ms. Li's family insisted on seeing her, but after some time, the guard said they weren't allowed to see her. Before they left the detention centre, Ms. Li's family was able to get the 400 yuan back. Afterwards, the family went to the detention centre many times to try to see her, but was always told that Ms. Li was being “transformed” and couldn't see them. They were later told that members of the City Political and Judiciary Committee were there to participate in the persecution.

Ms. Li’s family went to the detention centre again at around 9:00 a.m. on May 28th and demanded to see her. The guard told them, “People from the provincial agency are here inspecting. You can't visit her.” As they tried to negotiate a way to see Ms. Li, someone came out and claimed to be director Li. When he was told that Ms. Li’s family wanted to see her, the director replied, “No way. She is a Falun Gong [practitioner] and can't be seen. She is being transformed now.” When the family asked, “How can we see her?” Li said, “Go home and dream about it.” He also pointed at a family member and said, “You, you are not allowed to come here anymore. She is being detained for 15 days. Come and get her then.” When asked if the family can talk to the agency that handles Ms. Li's case, director Li arrogantly said, “The agency that handles the case is nothing.”

On June 1st, after 15 days of detention, Ms. Li's family went to the detention centre, but was told that she had been transferred back to Taoshan Police Station. When they went to the police station, director Wang Xifu claimed, “She was transferred to another detention centre, and the person who handles her case, Li Wanji, is out.” They were still not allowed to see her when the family went back on June 2nd and June 10th.

Finally on June 13th, Ms. Li’s family was able to see her. They found out that she had been beaten at the detention centre. She had lost weight and there were dried blood stains on her clothes.

It was learned that Ms. Wang Xiuling has lost control of her bowels and bladder due to the persecution. Ms. Ding Shiying was viciously beaten by deputy director Zhen Guiyi and guard Huang Jundong in mid-May.
