Dalian Falun Gong practitioner Liu Ronghua was due for release on September 22nd, after completing a two-year forced labour camp sentence. Her release date was quite important for her parents who are in their eighties, her beloved husband, and her son. They have been waiting for her release for the past two years.

On September 22nd however, instead of a family reunion, they received a phone call from the authorities informing them that Ms. Liu was being transferred from Shenyang Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp to the Dalian Yaojia Detention Centre. She remained under arrest, awaiting sentencing. Her family was shocked and extremely upset by this blatantly illegal act.

Ms. Liu was a teacher at Dalian Aquatic School (renamed Dalian Ocean School). She started practising Falun Gong in 1998, and abided by the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance. Her health subsequently improved, and she diligently authored articles which were published in the “China Encyclopedia”. Such a prestigious educator has been persecuted numerous times since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began persecuting Falun Gong in 1999.

1. First Persecuted in a Forced Labour Camp

On April 25th, 2001, Ms. Liu was arrested by officer Lin Hai and other personnel from Heishijiao Police Station while teaching in her classroom.

Ms. Liu refused to sign detention documentation. Her school administrator disregarded concerns that her husband was away on a business trip, and that she had a five year-old son home alone without anyone to care for him (their grandparents were out-of-town). He cooperated with police and gave them permission to take her away.

In July 2001, she was sentenced to the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp for one year. Due to her higher education credentials (a Masters degree), former warden Su Jing identified her as an object for intensified transformation [forcibly renounce Falun Gong]. She was hung in a water-filled cell for 21 days, leaving her with an injured left wrist, while scabs as large as a fist formed on her back; she sustained wounds over her entire body.

During her labour camp sentence, her husband gave in to pressure from authorities, and was forced to divorce her.

After her release from the forced labour camp, she went back to her school only to find that CCP Secretary Li Yuanpeng from Dalian Aquatic School had fired her in July 2001, without justification. She visited the school numerous times to request her job back, but was refused each time.

2. Second Forced Labour Camp Sentence

On September 23rd, 2009, Ms. Liu was arrested by officers from Dalian Qingniwaqiao Police Station at her home, and taken to the Yaojia Detention Centre. Officials interrogated her numerous times, but she didn't cooperate with guards and refused to stand facing the wall. She was cursed by the guard, but called out: “Falun Gong is good! Falun Gong is innocent!” The detention centre director slapped her face repeatedly with great force.

She was given a two-year sentence in the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp in October 2009. She still refused to give up her beliefs, so her family visitation rights were revoked. Authorities failed to provide proper documentation of the verdict, so no lawyer would accept her case, and subsequently, she and her family lost the opportunity for an appeal.

The Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp is notorious for its bloody, indecent torture to Falun Gong practitioners. Due to the tight security of information, we don't know the details of her persecution at this time, but learned about some activities from practitioners who were released from the labour camp.

Inside the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp, practitioners were forced to give up their beliefs and subjected to brainwashing. They were pressured to accept the CCP's slander against Falun Gong and its founder Teacher Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, and also to perform heavy slave labour.

The labor camp's methods include:

Practitioners were required to write a guarantee statement which announced their intention to give up their beliefs, slander Falun Gong and its founder and issue a repentance statement to expose other practitioners);
Force practitioners to answer “homework”questions, where they were required to write answers given by the guards;
To “act as an example to others”, where practitioners were forced to slander Falun Gong and its founder according to guards' requests;
Forced to watch video that slandered Falun Gong and its founder;
Forced to learn the labor camp regulations and rules, and to sing songs which eulogized the CCP;
Sign their names on falsified examinations. Practitioners objecting to any requests were subject to brutal torture.
Since Ms. Liu refused to cooperate with these unreasonable requests, nor would she give up her beliefs, she was subjected to various torture methods, including:

1. Stretch torture: Handcuffed to different sections of two double beds, several guards stretch the bed in opposite directions, twisting the victim's body; the practitioner is in severe pain with very restricted movement. This torture method can cause disability. Sometimes, the guards stretch the victim to their physical limit, then put on headphones and force them to listen to the slandering audio.

2. Brutal beatings: Ms. Liu was beaten to the point that she was unable to eat or drink; her lips turned purple, and she couldn't walk.

3. While she was extremely weak, she was forced to walk up and down the floors.

4. Extended sentence without justification: On one occasion, her sentence was extended because she didn't say hello to her team leader.

5. Deprived of basic human rights: Her family visitation rights were revoked, she wasn't allowed to make phone calls, not allowed to use her money, she was prevented from receiving packages that her family and friends sent to her.

Due to the extreme level of stress and physical torture, she suffered numerous heart attacks and lost a significant amount of weight. Even in this condition, she was forced to perform slave labour.

Her parents are in their 80's, and her mother has difficulty walking due to leg problems. Her mother visited the police station which was responsible for arresting her daughter three times, and demanded her release. After Ms. Liu was taken to the Masanjia Women's Forced Labour Camp, her mother and husband (after their divorce, they remarried later) tried to visit her several times, but the guards refused to let them see her. Her mother cried uncontrollably in the visitation room; when her husband tried to exercise his right to visit her, the guards threatened to arrest them.
