Six officers, including Zhu Zhenguo and Zhou Zihua from the Nongken Domestic Security Division, broke into Ms. Zhang Shuling's home on the afternoon of July 5th. They ransacked it and confiscated her personal belongings including a computer, a printer, DVDs, and Falun Gong books. Despite Ms. Zhang's extremely poor health, the police took her to the Jiayin Farm Police Station.

Ms. Zhang taught her students according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, but had been subjected many times to persecution at the hands of local police and her school officials. She was fired from her job, and was arrested on November 26th, 2003 as she was distributing information about Falun Gong. The police interrogated her and searched her home for evidence with which to persecute her. Ms. Zhang was then given a three-year prison term and held in Harbin Women's Prison. She was released in 2006. The three-year persecution left Ms. Zhang physically and mentally devastated. She was extremely weak and found a lump in her breast.

After Ms. Zhang was taken into custody, her family went to the police station to demand her release. The police wouldn't release her, but instead sent her to the Nongken Detention Centre on the morning of July 7th. Ms. Zhang's condition worsened, and with the family's strong demand, she was released on bail.

Ms. Zhang passed away in a Harbin Hospital on July 30th.
